20 long years ago ago, Golf R32 was the the quickest Volkswagen ever produced. VW is marking the occasion with the Volkswagen Golf R 20 Years special edition, the quickest Golf ever.
50 Golf R 20 Years are coming to Australia and will be available from July 13, costing $77,490 each. That hefty price gets some hefty additions.
Additions include an Akrapovic titanium exhaust, power and torque upgrades better sound and bigger turbocharger performance. Other upgrades include a sharper-shifting transmission, carbon décor inserts, and Golf R 20 Years exterior styling. Not only that but all Golf R options are standard such as premium paint, panoramic sunroof and Harman/Kardon premium audio.
Volkswagen Passenger Vehicles director Michal Szaniecki said the Golf R 20 Years is a fitting tribute to two decades and five generations of ultimate Golfs.
“The original Mark 4 and Mark 5 Volkswagen Golf R32 introduced the pioneering DSG and were renowned for their sonorous acoustics and compact agility,” Mr Szaniecki said.
“As our flagship hot hatchback evolved to become the Mark 6 and Mark 7 Golf R they led the segment for all-wheel drive traction and performance at a time when rally-bred sedan rivals departed the segment or simply didn’t evolve.

“Now, the Mark 8 Golf R moves onto another level with its torque-vectoring all-wheel drive system fused with incredible technology. It is fitting that this 20 Years special edition is about both enhanced styling, more power and torque, sharper responses from the transmission and an even more expressive sound.”

- special exhaust system $6,000
$8,900 in value.
The Akrapovic titanium exhaust is making its Mk8 R debut, and we hope it is as good as in previous offerings. It gives acoustic feedback with additional ‘pops’ and ‘bangs’ even low in the rev range, just the thing for boy racers.
The power comes from a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder that has a petrol particulate filter (PPF). Power is up by 10kw, to 245kW, and torque of 420Nm is 20Nm over the standard model. The all-important 0-100km/h is 4.6 seconds, making the special edition the faster Golf to have been sold in Australia..
This is joined by, following a longer 1.5-second press of the starter button, activating a raised engine idle speed of 2,500rpm. The engine also now delivers a more aggressive sound overall, particularly from 4,000rpm.
Turbocharger ‘pre-loading’ operates in the part-load range (e.g. country driving at constant speed), for faster power development.
For that added racetrack feel, the DSG has a noticeable shifting jolt between first and seventh gears when using the right hand paddle. This is active in manual mode of gear selector positions S and S+.
The special edition has 19″ Estoril alloy wheels painted in black with Lapiz Blue exterior paint, or black and blue with the single other exterior colour alternative – Pure White.
Door mirrors are deep black (with Lapiz Blue) or Lapiz Blue (with Pure White), and there is a ’20 Years’ badge on each B-pillar, and a welcome projection light from mirrors.
The cabin has genuine carbon décor inserts across the dashboard and doors.
Importantly, the Volkswagen Golf R 20 Years is sold out globally. Australian buyers can only order eonline at volkswagen.com.au from July 13, with cars delivered through Volkswagen dealerships as usual.
A total of 32 Lapiz Blue Premium Metallic and 18 Pure White examples will be offered.
