For years Alfa Romeo produced beautiful cars and coupés. They were elegant and handled like sports cars whether they were sedans, wagons, coupés, or humble daily drivers. Sure, quality was a bit of a worry, but they looked gorgeous.

Somehow Alfa Romeo lost its way.

Slowly, the smaller models disappeared, shrinking to just 2 models, Giulia and Stelvio, but each comes with a piping hot race version, the Quadrifoglio. That is what we’ve been doing our chores in this week, a Stelvio Quadrifoglio and it was as delicious as the Giulia we drove previously.

Stelvio Quadrifoglio has the charm and elegance of an Italian renaissance masterpiece, with the power and handling of a nuclear weapon.

Stelvio is an SUV, but gay campers, you won’t be going too far afield. Yes, it is achingly pretty, but 21” wheels (optional) wheels won’t play nice with rocks. You should still get to a campsite though, should you feel the need to go somewhere secluded.

Our Trofeo White is an option, but it sparkles like a Mardi Cras float, but it is as naught when you fire the v6 into life.

It spits and farts and rumbles and burbles in a way that is far more satisfying than it should be.

The Cabin

Accessing then interior via easy access/start lets you slide into the leather/Alcantara seats without having to fumble about in your pocket for a key. It is relatively easy to pair your phone, but apple carplay/android auto is wired. So although there is wireless charge, your phone will live vertically in its little cubby hole, leaving the cord to flail about in the breeze.

You don’t so much sit in an Stelvio Quadrifoglio as you fit it on like a hand-crafted shoe, so the cabin feels cosy and familiar.

Once ensconced and your phone is wired in, or paired to Bluetooth, you’re off

The Drive:

We’ve reviewed Stelvio before, so won’t go into too much detail about the cabin, because Quadrifoglio and Stelvio are the same, but the Q is fancier.

The chassis still feels as tight as a drum, and the steering is pin sharp. The big brakes pull you up fast, but you can stop faster with a $15,950 Carbon Ceramic disc upgrade. In fact, there is a long list of upgrades, but the power remains at a massive 375kw/600Nm, and it is grand, with a thunderous sound track.

Once you negotiate the temperamental gear lever, you’re off. Its design allows you to grab the park and gear release buttons at the same time, landing you in neutral.

I’d love to give the Sparco seats a go but could live without the rest. That engine, and its silky 8-speed automatic is more than enough to be going on with.

Leaving it in automatic is fun, and there are DNA drive modes to experiment with, but we left the Race mode alone.

Dynamic brings the electronics to attention. The engine, suspension, and gearbox sing to a frantic tune, making the exhaust cackling between gears. This is one an SUV you probably would want to take to a track, but driving through the countryside is rewarding beyond description so leave tracks to the bogans.

You take bends as fast as the limits allow, knowing the car is working at 2/10th of its ability. It is just a joy.

It is almost psychic in its ability to switch cogs at the right time, and a quick dab of brakes set Stelvio up to rocket out of a corner at light speed. Of course, this is what an Alfa is built for, but it is just as happy to pop in to Coles for milk and a sliced loaf.

Naturally this does have a bit of an affect on economy, and we nave managed better than 11.5L/100k. Having said that, the temptation to plant the loafer is almost irresistible.

Conclusion

Stelvio Quadrifoglio is an accidental GT car, capable of great power and distance. You can take it to the track, is strap a couple of skis on top for a roll in the snow. Besides, après-ski is where the fun is at, so ditch the skis and go straight to whatever the snow equivalent is on the 19th hole.

The sexy Italian is all things to all people, but if a 3.8 second 0-100 drive of Stelvio Quadrifoglio doesn’t awaken your inner bogan, nothing will.
