2022 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon Review – How Easy is it to Drive in Town?

She is a big ol chunk of iron, this 2022 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon. Think really long Wrangler with a tray big enough for a couple of mucky dirt bikes, and you’re on the right track.

The quality control and reliability had taken a hit, with patchy manufacturing control and defects making ownership a nightmare. Jeep claim these issues have been fixed and off lifetime roadside assist as a reassurance.

Jeep Gladiator is is the granddaddy of Jeeps and has all the kudos gained by Wranglers crossing continents, winning wars, and being taken pig shooting by handsome-yet-drunken flanneled yobbos. That means fun to you and I, and while I leave you with that visual image, we move on.

First some basics: Once the panels easily came off in just a few ticks. A confident butcher could have this bird filleted in a flash. Now you need half a day, a tool kit, and a degree. The doors and rear roof have electrical connections, and the windscreen has bolts at the top edge. It would be easier to build a cathedral. And  remember, you can’t take the bits with you, this ain’t no convertible you’re talking about.

Outside:

The 3-part roof is obvious, and the tie-downs on the bonnet are rubber, so double as bumpers when the windscreen is folded down. The bumper bars have sturdy hooks for bush-bashing extraction, and the rear tub is enormous. There are a bunch of uses not restricted to shopping at Bunnings. You really can go very far off-road, but the almost 3,000kg Jeep has a carrying capacity of 693kg, and that includes the handsome flannelled yobbos inside.

There are options for enclosing the tray too, something slightly soiled tradies may want to consider.

The Cabin:

Inside is a design not based in luxury. It is meant to be as practical as it looks so don’t expect too many nods to high-end travel. That is not to say 2022 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon is bereft though. There is leather seating, with heating for those up front. Bi-zone climate control, wired Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and a carpeted floor are expected in a vehicle costing over 70 grand.

Although it can be fully opened to the environment, modern Jeeps are as vulnerable to the elements as any other car. You could just take out the 2 front panels, and although they take up a lot of space in the back seat.

The Drive:

The 3.6L V6 Pentastar is a pearler. Not only is it as smooth a Bublé ballad, the 8 speed automatic shifts are almost imperceptible. The off-roading levers and buttons will get little use I fear. What a shame. 2022 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon is incredibly capable in the muck and rocks of the outback, but like most SUVs, is going to be city-bound.

This drive was confined to weekly chores, far short-changing its capabilities. A viewer commented that Gladiator couldn’t be easily parked in shopping centres. What utter nonsense. To prove this, we took the big Jeep to the local Maccas, where it slipped into the tight spot with the dexterity of a yoga master.

On the highway, 2022 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon was a trifle wayward. Big knobbly off-road tyres don’t play nice with smooth bitumen. That doesn’t mean it isn’t a pleasant trip, and you could certainly do a cross-country in a thrice.

I enjoyed Gladiator, and always do, not because of what it is, but what it is not. It feels sturdy and although the Wrangler got a less-than-sterling crash test rating, Gladiator makes the driver feel invincible.

Ride is firm, and at speed the cabin is reasonably quiet. The sound system does the job but there is always a small part of me that wants a go in it naked, without its dressing and pretty bits.

Conclusion:

The hairy-chested machismo oozes from every pore. It doesn’t seem to matter that it isn’t the best road drive. It says, “I am here, come and do your worst.”
