Our week in the Corvette Stingray C8 LT3 Convertible ($214,500) has been and whole big bucketload of Yankee bliss. An American supercar? Whoever heard of such a thing?

Ahead of our full review, you will hear of such a thing right now.

The 2024 C8 Stingray is a thing of beauty, garnering more positive comments than any car of recent memory. The public are the best judges, and they say yes. It continues the long line of pretty sports cars, preferred by movie stars and astronauts, since 1959 and in Australia comes from a GMSV showroom.

The drive with my Gen Z sidekick found the Corvette to be a peach. Ryan was particularly enraptured by the visceral induction of the exhaust’s glorious bass notes directly into one’s inner sanctum.

I liked the look and feel of Corvette’s svelte body, and the look of the folding solid roof origami-ing itself into its hidey hole with a reassuring “clunk”.

TOP TIP: the soft close frunk will close whether you’ve gotten your fingertips out of the way or not. Drop the bonnet from a few centimetres above the catch to avoid a trip to the E.R.

Top Ten

1: The engine: it is a brutal peach poised just at the giddy edge of certain disaster. It is thinking of ways to kill you in a way worthy of a thrilling Bond sequence. The 6.2L pumps a monstrous 369kw/637Nm worth of ecstasy to the rear wheels through an 8-speed dual clutch automatic.

2: Handling: American cars are not known for going around corners. Let’s face it, Yank Tanks wallow from one bend to the next, but the surgical skill of Corvette’s directional shifts is almost psychic.

3: Storage: Supercars and storage do not go hand in hand but the is around 357L of boot and front storage combined. Soft totes are best, and is more than enough for a little light touring.

4: Acceleration: 0-100 of 3.8 seconds feels much faster when you’re still peeling your face of the back window after the event

5: Roll down back window: Genius engineering allow the convertible’s rear window to be lowered or raised whether the roof is stowed or deployed. It acts as a wind deflector too.

6: Hard folding roof: the roof folds in several sections, sitting under the engine cover which in turn raises itself to allow the roof to disappear.

7: 8-speed DCT: the automatic shifts through all 8 cogs smoothly. It is a little snarky at low speeds, as are all dual clutch jobs.

8: Interior: the dash is fabulously weird with the climate controls strewn along the rib that runs atop the centre console and defines each seating position. The 3 screens include an HUD and are beautifully designed to be functional as well as easy to use. That gear selector is fun and simply to use, and the steering wheel paddles feel solid. The killer sound system is 1st class.

9: Seats: seating is comfortable enough to be tight on a track yet smooth and silk on the highway.

10: Ride: Supercars have rubbish ride unless the adjustable suspension allows the normal setting to be less than rock hard. The Magnetic Selection Ride Control allows the nose to be raised for those difficult to navigate speed bumps and driveways. It is clever enough to use the GPS to remember where you’ve raised the nose previously, and will repeat as needed.

A few bad things make the good seem all the more piquant, and the lack of DAB+ is annoying in a 200 grand jalopy. Wireless CarPlay makes up for it somewhat. There is nowhere for your phone except for the single holder between the seats below the rear centre speaker. Yes, there are 2 cup holders, God bless America.

There is a 12v outlet in the frunk, and another under the glove box. The latter is strangely large for a super-sport.
