The GWM Tank 500 and Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max scored a five-star ANCAP safety rating recently. There are few 3-row SUVs on the market, and even fewer that have been tested against ANCAP’s 2023-2025 protocols.
GWM Tank 500 got a five-star rating in each of ANCAP’s assessment pillars.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing though. Despite a swag of good scores in the destructive crash tests, with top scores for adult and child occupants in the side impact tests, there was a full 8.00 point vehicle compatibility penalty for Tank 500’s increased risk to occupants of a struck oncoming vehicle.
The GWM Tank 500 got (93%) for Child Occupant Protection, which is the highest score of any vehicle so far under ANCAP’s current 2023-2025 protocols. GWM Tank 500’s high rating was helped along by an advanced direct child presence detection (CPD) system. It has sensors that detect physical and respiratory movements, should an occupant be accidentally left inside once the vehicle is locked. When motion is detected, the SUV blows the horn and sends mobile phone and email notifications to alert the driver.

“Our protocols encourage the fitment of direct child presence detection systems in an effort to reduce instances where children are inadvertently left in a car,” said ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, Carla Hoorweg.
“The CPD system fitted to the GWM Tank 500 is one of the more advanced systems assessed by ANCAP so far, and it’s great to see manufacturers implementing this potentially life-saving technology,” Ms Hoorweg added.
GWM Tank 500’s is full range of autonomous emergency braking and lane support got high scores in braking and lane support tests with pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycles, and other vehicles.
The three-row Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max arrives this month, and managed a five-star ANCAP rating thanks to the five-star score alreaded awarded to its closely-related partner model, the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro. ANCAP tested Tiggo 7 Pro last year, with extra pedestrian protection tests added for the Tiggo 8. Additionally, ANCAP used additional technical information that was provided by the manufacturer, to evaluate any potential differences.
“Chery’s latest offering adds to their current five-star SUV line up, with safer options for buyers,” said Ms Hoorweg.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Neither GWM Tank 500 and Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max have top-tether child restraint anchorages in the 3rd row, making that row unsuitable for transporting young children.
