The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) today announced maximum 5 star safety ratings for two Mercedes-Benz models – the all new B-Class and the Valente van.

Upholding the safety reputation of Mercedes-Benz, all variants of the B-Class have been awarded the highest ANCAP safety rating of 5 stars. Contributing to this result is the long list of innovative Safety Assist Technologies (SAT) that have been incorporated into this model including a radar-based collision warning system and brake assist – both standard.

Additional active SATs such as lane keeping assist and blind spot assist are also available.

“The ANCAP Rating Road Map progressively introduces minimum mandatory and additional SAT requirements over the coming years. Ahead of its time however, the B-Class has scored beyond the current requirements to achieve this 5 star result,” said ANCAP Chair, Mr Lauchlan McIntosh.

With Mercedes taking out the prize for the first 5 star Australian rated van – the Viano – this 5 star rating has also been extended to the Mercedes-Benz Valente. The Australian model of this people mover comes equipped as standard with head-protecting side airbags for the front seats. This helped it achieve its maximum safety rating.

“As early as the 1950s Mercedes was forging ahead in vehicle safety with the development of the passenger safety cell, and with the addition of modern-day SATs, this is a winning combination for consumers,” Mr McIntosh said.

ANCAP is supported by all Australian and New Zealand motoring clubs, the Australian Government, the New Zealand Government, all Australian state governments, the Victorian Transport Accident Commission, NRMA Insurance and the FIA Foundation.
