All New Honda Civic Type R Gets the Bang to go With the Looks

Type R has a 30-year, and finally all-new Civic Type R has the power to match the looks.

The new Civic Type R brings a whopping 235kw punch for 2023. It set a new production-car front-wheel drive track record at the Suzuka Circuit in Japan, home to the Formula 1 Honda Japanese Grand Prix.

testing

Handling and steering performance got a thorough test in Japan, as well as tracks in North America and Europe, including the mighty Nürburgring, the world’s most challenging racetrack.

Honda’s K20C1 has a redesigned turbocharger, increased air intake flow rate and a new, more efficient exhaust system that features a straight through design and an active exhaust valve.

The 235 kW / 420 Nm turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine shows an increase of 7 kW and 20 Nm over the last Type R.

Its six-speed manual has a lighter flywheel with revised rev-match.

The all-new 11th-generation Civic hatch is less over-designed than its predecessor, something that will please many.

Retuned dual-axis strut front and multilink rear suspension improves ride and handling, and can select four Drive Modes.  Engine, steering, suspension and engine sound, all respond to Comfort, Sport and +R modes, as well as ‘Individual’ mode where the driver can tailor settings to his/her own tastes.

Looks

New Civic Type R is all Honda, but far less fussy than before. Many cues come from aerodynamic requirements, and produces more downforce for high speed stability.

The Japanese design team gave the Type R a sleeker look while keeping those familiar muscular body features like flared wheelarches over wider tracks with lightweight 19-inch matte black alloys Grip comes from Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres, with the new wheels using a special ‘reverse rim’ design that improves the stability of the tyre contact patch under load.

The Cabin

The cockpit includes familiar touches like the Type R’s red seats, carpet and trim. A redesigned aluminium shift knob and a serialised Type R finish the custom look.

The lower drive position comes thanks to, lighter, body-hugging sport seats. There is better visibility with thinner pillars and a relocated side mirror

Type R gets a new digital display with a large tachometer and gear-position display, and a multi-information display. A second meter design includes engine rpm and gear position placed at the top.

Honda LogR performance datalogger uses the onboard computer and sensors, combined with a new built-in vehicle app. The driver the record data to improve techique

Production

Civic Type R is built at the Yorii Plant in Japan, and the K20C1 engine comes from Honda’s Anna Engine Plant in Ohio.

Pricing and further details on the new Civic Type R will be announced closer to the Australian launch in early 2023.
