All New Jeep Compass Hybrid Details Revealed

Jeep Australia has revealed details of the all-new Jeep Compass e-Hybrid and 4xe, that will arrive later in 2024, priced from $45,990.

Electrification is picking for the American Off-Roading icon and it started with Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe and the announcement of the Jeep Avenger EV.

Jeep Compass e-Hybrid FWD

The 1.5L, 4-cylinder petrol has a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and a 48V battery mild hybrid drive. Jeep Compass e-Hybrid mild hybrid is denoted by a green ‘e-torque’ badge on the rear tailgate.

Jeep Compass e-Hybrid can behave like an EV at low speeds such as when parking parking (<15km/h). The 48V battery is able to assist the Compass at high speeds too.

The Jeep Compass e-Hybrid can switch between full electric, hybrid, and the petrol engines depending on speed, load and how much how much charge is in the 48V battery with its 17.5Ah capacity.

The 96kW/240Nm Jeep Compass e-Hybrid FWD has decent fuel figures of 5.1L/100km, emitting 116g/km CO2.

Th

  • Silent Start: starts the vehicle with no need to turn on the petrol engine, by using an EV pure-electric, silent driving mode;
  • Energy Recovery: recovers energy that would otherwise be wasted when the vehicle decelerates (e-Coasting) and during braking (Regenerative Braking);
  • Boost & Load Point Shift: ‘e-Boosting’ allows an increase in torque to the wheels from the electric motor that supports the petrol engine; moreover, by taking advantage of the (drive or braking) torque delivered by the electric motor, it is possible to optimise the operating point of the petrol engine; and
  • Electric Drive: the vehicle can travel in silence and with zero emissions using only the electric motor, while the petrol engine is turned off.
  • e-Launch: starts the vehicle using only the electric motor, when starting up or restarting at traffic lights;
  • e-Creeping: the electric motor provides the start-up normally seen in electric vehicles, at a speed that can vary from 0 km/h to the equivalent of the petrol engine idling in first gear, or in reverse;
  • e-Queueing: the vehicle can keep going in a traffic jam, following a ‘stop and go’ pattern in full-electric mode;
  • e-Parking: simplifies parking maneuvers, which can be carried out using electric propulsion only, to ensure a practical and quiet experience.

Jeep Compass e-Hybrid tows 1,450kg of braked load, more than the 2.4L Tigershark engine it replaces.

Jeep Compass 4xe PHEV (AWD)

The 4xe is a different thing altogether. As we have seen with other brands such as Toyota’s RAV4 hybrid uses a petrol engine for the front wheels and small electric motor for the rear.

Jeep Compass 4xe combines a 132kW/270Nm 1.3L turbo petrol engine coupled is coupled to a 6-speed automatic on the front wheels.

The rear 44kW/250Nm electric motor gets its energy from a 11.4kWh but operates independently from the front wheels and its petrol engine.

By mixing both drives to provide AWD, the 176kw Jeep Compass 4xe has a 0-100 of 7.3 seconds, a pure electric top speed of 130 km/h, and 200 km/h using the electric motor and petrol engine in hybrid mode.

With a full charge, the Jeep Compass 4xe PHEV has an EV a range of 47.3km, after which reverts to normal hybrid operation.  Fuel consumption assuming the Compass 4xe spends some of its time using the petrol engine, is 2.1L/100km.

Jeep Compass 4xe has a new six-speed automatic transmission selector, updated Selec-Terrain rotary control with eAWD modes (4WD Lock, 4WD Low, Hill Descent Control). Modes include  Auto, Snow, Mud & Sand, and Rock, there is the new Sport mode, for enhanced throttle response and steering.

Jeep Compass 4xe has 4xe badging, with blue accents on ‘JEEP’ and ‘COMPASS’ and on the Type 2 Smart Charging Port at the rear.

The on-board 7.4kW charger allows:

Mode 2: Domestic charging uses a mode 2 charging cable (included with the Jeep) that allows 13A current at a max rate of 3kW.

Mode 3: AC charging at a maximum rate of 7.4kW (single-phase) and is supported by the standard mode 3 charging cable. This cable enables charging up to 32A current and can be used both at home with an EV wallbox or at public AC charging stations.

The Type 2 Smart Charging Port allows for the setting of charging schedules or delayed charging.

The E-Save button allows the system to charge the battery (Battery Charge – active E-Save) or to maintain the battery charge (Battery Save – passive E-Save) using the petrol engine while driving.

Regenerative braking, as with most EV and Hybrid vehicles, recovers energy that would normally be dissipated as heat on the brake discs, and stores it in the battery. Normal braking us used in emergencies and/or at low speeds.
