Mini’s new John Cooper Works Countryman is marketed as a “spacious all-rounder”, and has grown to the point where a classic mini could almost be shoehorned inside. Its ALL4 all-wheel drive system, makes the Countryman Crossover an off-road contender.

MINI John Cooper Works Countryman has a drag coefficient of 0.26, making it one of the most aerodynamic cars in its class, not that that would take much. The 221 kW / 400 Nm engine is good for a 0 to 100 km/h of 5.4 seconds, on to a top speed of 250 km/h.

Driving

All-wheel drive badging, brake calipers in Chili Red, and MINI John Cooper Works DNA makes this Countryman a notably high-performance model. The cabin has enhanced engine notes to heighten the experience, with a JCW sound extension making engine start a cinematic adventure.

The Mini is more than just badging and good looks, The brawny engine, has optimised pistons, connecting rods and engine mounts. The two-litre turbo engine uses a dual-drive exhaust turbocharger and a dethrottled air intake to the combustion chamber.

Tyre diameter is 30 mm larger, at 710 mm. They are 245 mm wide and is wrapped around either 19 and 20-inch wheels.

Driving assistance.

MINI JCW Countryman uses 12 ultrasonic sensors and four surround-view cameras to provide driver assistance systems with Level 2 driving automation on the Driving Assistant Professional option package.

It is so clever, it can detect gaps in the traffic to allow changing lanes heading towards an exit,  bringing the Countryman to the best speed for the assisted lane change. For the first time, MINI Countryman drivers can actually  take their hands off the steering wheel on highway-like routes at speeds of up to 60 km/h, provided they continue to keep a close eye on traffic and remain ready to intervene at any time. Freeway-traffic in the afternoon becomes much less stressful as a result.

Boy Racer Cabin.

MINI John Cooper Works Countryman keeps things nice and simple, by comparison. The cockpit has an upper and lower section, with vertical door handles and air vents in the upper area. The red and black dashboard, door panels and JCW sports seats, carries on the racing theme. The dashboard’s-tone fabric is made from recycled polyester.

Rear seats can be adjusted in length by up to 13cm, and when folded, make the 460L boot space increase to 1,450L.

Switch gear is laid out so that functions fall naturally to hand. The familiar MINI toggle bar controls driving functions, while centre OLED display houses the rest. Functions such as MINI Experience Modes, preferred driving ambience and go-kart mode are some of the selections on offer

The voice assistant can be used to interact with selected functions. Navigation, telephone, and entertainment can be voice-controlled using the circular OLED display to show animation of graphic elements, typography, and an avatar.
