All New Santa Fe Smashes Hyundai’s Conservative Image to Bits

Hyundai has revealed its stunning all-new Santa Fe. The fifth-generation large SUV is said to have been restyled to suit future outdoor lifestyle trends.

The current Santa Fe arrived in 2018, and was seen as a departure from previous Hyundai design. The new model has taken the route of Kia’s EV9 with a stunning squared-off body for big interior spaces that are as useable as they look. From the rear, an enlarged tailgate opens to large, usable “terrace”, a space to do with as the owners wish.

“The all-new Santa Fe is an SUV that finds a perfect balance between city life and the great outdoors, handling everything from busy family itineraries to car camping adventures,” said SangYup Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai Global Design Center. “With its longer wheelbase, roomy interior and terrace-like tailgate space, the new Santa Fe leans into its SUV strengths to offer more versatility than ever before as well as a premium customer experience.”

exterior

Santa Fe’s boxy shape benefits from a long wheelbase and wide tailgate area.

The front features H-shaped headlamps and sharp mug guards. The H-shaped headlamps motif is repeated in being part of the light bar, to give the head on look a completely unmistakable look. The “horizon line” as they call it, is now becoming a common feature among the group brans.

In profile, a long wheelbase and strong roofline, give an impression of vast interiors. The powerful look is further strengthened a cubist feel to the lines, squared off wheel arches, and a short front overhang make 21-inch wheels look even bigger.

The rear end perhaps a little too simple. The H-shaped taillights are among the very few features on what is a massive area. This could be a polarising design that people will either love or hate, but they certainly won’t ignore it.

Inside

The massive tailgate offers a “terrace-like feel at the rear” when open. The 2nd and 3rd rows of seats fully fold, for a cavernous effect.

The H-motif is revisited in the dashboard and air vents, and gives the cabin a look and feel of an up-market move by the Korean car maker once known for cheap and cheerful.

Santa Fe uses the group’s Panoramic Curved Display (2 x 12.3-inch digital screens), and there is dual wireless charging down on the console. Interior design features brightly coloured seats and headliner. Along with soft-touch wood-patterned features, and embroidered Nappa leather seats The cabin looks classy beyond measure.

Some of the new sustainable materials feature in the suede headliner, car mats, and second- and third-row seatbacks whiach are made from recycled plastic. The crash pad and door trims are covered in eco-friendly leatherette (AKA plastic).

Hyundai clams the colour palette used both inside and out, are inspired by natural light to give the big SUV a sense of belonging outdoors. If there is one thing the current model lacks, it is off-road cred, but the all-new Santa Fe looks like it will climb mountains. The proof of the pudding is in the eating so stay tuned for our reviews after the local launch. It looks as tough as boots but time will tell.

Families come in all shapes and sizes, but I have a feeling gay campers are going to think seriously about something that looks this butch,

The all-new Santa Fe will make its world premiere in August on Hyundai’s YouTube channel.
