ANCAP Ranks Big Utes by Safety — Ford F-150 Tops, Chevy Flops

Australia’s ute obsession just hit a reality check. ANCAP’s first-ever Large Utilities ADAS Safety Comparison has named and shamed the big American pickups — and it’s not good news for Chevrolet.

The updated Ford F-150 strutted away with a Platinum 81% score, showing off a suite of crash-avoidance tech that could save more than just your pride. Close behind was the RAM 1500, earning Gold with 70%, proving brawn and brains can coexist.

Toyota’s LandCruiser 79 Series and Tundra both clocked up Silver, with the 79 outshining its flashier cousin (55% vs 50%). But the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 barely scraped Bronze, a paltry 27% — less “cowboy tough”, more “needs adult supervision.”

ANCAP boss Carla Hoorweg says the move sets a new benchmark for massive metal on suburban streets, where bonnet heights are taller than schoolkids. “Bigger vehicles pose bigger risks,” she noted, urging brands to up their crash-avoidance game.

Sales of big utes like the Silverado, F-150, RAM, and Tundra have exploded 270% since 2019, with more than 22,500 sold in 2024. Once the domain of tradies and farmers, they’re now a suburban status symbol — towing boats, caravans, and occasionally egos.

Future ANCAP testing may include full crash protection for these leviathans, ensuring both crash avoidance and crash survivability are properly measured. Until then, Ford wears the crown, Chevy wears the cone of shame, and everyone else is somewhere in between.
