BMW has been making a big noise about the digitalisation of access to its vehicles, working with Apple and Google on cross-platform sharing. Previously users were not able to share access between platforms, only able to share via iMessage. but now
In the latest update, users can now pass keys to friends or family from the wallet via the “share” function already widely used in many apps.
Your digital key could be sent using WhatsApp for example. The receiver then adds the Digital Key to their wallet by clicking on the link. Apple AirDrop or Android Nearby can also be used. If a security code is asked for, the sender should do so by using a different medium, eg iMessage.
Once received on an iPhone, the recipient could even add it to his or her Apple Watch.
This new function is already on BMW’s with BMW Digital Key or BMW Digital Key Plus. Older cars might be able to use the feature once software is updated to “22-11” or later using the Remote Software Upgrade.
