BMW iX M60: Stunning Power, If You Can Tolerate the Looks

BMW launches another all new electric car, the iX M60

BMW iX mM60 debuted on the 5th of January at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, and goes on sale around halfway through  2022.

iX M60 is the 3rd in the BMW iX line-up, following the reveal of the BMW i4 M50, also coming in 2022.

Like most EVs, iX M60 has decent power figures, around 455kw/1015Nm, and 1100Nm when Launch Control is activated. 0- 100km/h comes up in 3.8-seconds and on a top speed of 250km/h.

Under the skin there is electric all-wheel-drive, actuator-based wheel slip limitation and dual-axle air suspension with automatic level control.

Range is a respectable 566 kilometres but we all know that is more likely to be considerably less in real life driving.

BMW’s new future modular system

This advanced technology focuses on areas of driver assistance, operation, connectivity and digital services.

Not only that, but the interior architecture makes for a spacious cabin with no need of mechanical intrusions from the front, or under the floor.

All iX models come fully loaded. There is a new generation of sensors, a new software stack and a powerful computing platform also provide considerable potential for consistently advancing automated driving and parking functions.

iDrive makes interaction with the driver  easier, and includes touch, and natural speech commands.

It uses the new BMW Operating System 8 focusing on the curved  touch screen, and the voice commands also access the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

As with many new cars, software updates are over-the-air.

Navigation uses cloud-based BMW Maps system and Augmented Reality Video using 5G capable connectivity.

Batteries and Charging

There is a 112kWh EV battery that can charge on (AC) up to 11kW and (DC) up to 200kW. Fast charging stations such as those we have used at Chargefox. That will take you from 10 to 80 percent in around 35 minutes, or 150 kilometres in just 10 minutes.

The Design:

The iX M60’s is claimed to have powerful proportions, but the look is an acquired taste.

M touches can be seen in brake dark blue brake callipers, and optional BMW Individual Titanium Bronze Exterior Line and M logos in the new High Gloss Black/Titanium Bronze finish on the front side panels and the rear of the vehicle.

Wheels are 22” aerodynamic alloy wheels in Titanium.

Inside, the cabin is spacious. Seats have integrated headrests, and there is a large BMW Curved Display. The unique look continues with hexagonal steering wheel and anthracite-coloured roof liner.

Legroom is vastly improved over fossil-fuelled cars with no centre tunnel, making the centre console look like a bit of high-end furniture.

The no-cost optional “Suite” interior includes olive leaf extract tanned natural leather seats, instrument panel, centre console and door trim surfaces, as well as Gold Bronze surfaces and controls.

Other inclusions are: BMW Live Cockpit Professional, BMW Natural Interaction, Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, BMW Laserlight, Comfort Access, Active Seat Ventilation for driver and front passenger and the Heat Comfort Package.

Holistic sustainability concept

Responsibly sourced resources throughout the entire value chain and the maximum reduction of the CO2 footprint throughout the product life cycle.

BMW claims the holistic approach is consistently implemented in vehicle development, throughout the supply chain and in the production of the BMW iX M60.

The supply of cobalt and lithium is sourced in Australia and Morocco, and electric motors design dispenses with rare earth metals in the rotors of the drives. In addition, any aluminium used, is produced using electricity from solar energy plants.

One hundred per cent green electricity is used for manufacturing the vehicles as well as for manufacturing battery cells. A high proportion of secondary aluminium and recycled plastic also contributes to the resource-efficient production of the BMW iX M60.

Interior aspects include FSC-certified wood and other natural materials, while recycled fishing nets serve as raw material for the floor coverings and floor mats.
