Brisbane Powerhouse and MINI: Mini Art Car

MINI and the iconic Brisbane Power House arts hub recently concluded a month-long MINI Art Car competition. The collaboration invited artists, designers, and creators to interpret the theme “Power Up” on a MINI Cooper 3-door hatch for Brisbane Powerhouse.

The chosen theme sought to raise awareness for the 20 year-old institution as it reopened its doors. After six weeks and numerous entries, Kristin Cosenza, a Melbourne-based graphic designer, took home top honours.

The design was inspired by switching up the standard driving mode into an exhilarating sport experience in my MINI Cooper S Hatch. The cabin lights change colours, and the infotainment screen contained within MINI’s signature circular control centre buzz with excitement. For Kristin, this driving mode was one of the aspects of her Mini Cooper she enjoyed the most.

The shapes and forms she created for the final canvas resemble a webbed spectrum of power, torque, handling ability and go-kart thrill – likely representative of her own MINI – a high-performance Cooper S variant.

These rounded spectra blend with the seemingly free-flowing curves of a race track. The punchy colours and fluid lines represent the feeling of freedom and celebrates creativity in all shapes. The high contrast created against the white canvas selected by Kristin also ensures neck cranes and head turns on the street.

The final touch on the completed wrap is a credit mention to the artist – Kristin’s name printed along the side of the MINI.

“I was incredibly excited and quietly surprised that my artwork had was selected by an overwhelmingly cool panel of judges for the Brisbane Mini Garage and Brisbane Powerhouse Art Car competition. I am super happy with my MINI Art car win and that it was a part of reigniting the spark for Brisbane Powerhouse. Thanks to everyone involved for making my idea a reality,” Ms. Cosenza said about her win.

Judges were unanimously enamored by Kristin’s design.

“Kristin Cosenza’s work is an almost organic pattern born from MINI and our go-kart heritage. Her design is lively and almost appears to move around the vehicle,” said Alex McLean, Head of Marketing, MINI Australia & New Zealand

“Kristin’s Design resonated strongest with us, a strong balance between an organic-style execution connected to a lovely story of using the car, and the digital connection of the inside of the dash. From a technical perspective we knew that it was going to wrap and move well on the car,” said Nick Pritchard, Creative Director and Agency Owner, Nick Did This.

“We liked that with Kristin’s design, whilst echoing the drive, we could interpret the shapes to mean multiple things, for example to be shape shifting, adapting and moving with the times,” said Kris Stewart, Artistic Director, Brisbane Powerhouse

“The design has a nice flow and has addressed the brief with the connection to landforms and how we navigate through them,” said Professor Lisa Scharoun, Head of School of Design at the Queensland University of Technology.

Kristin now joins the likes of David Bowie, Kate Moss and Paul Smith who have also designed their own MINIs. Her MINI Art Car will be on display at the Bisbane Powerhouse until the end of August.
