BYD and DENZA Bring the Battery Barrage to Goodwood

The Chinese chargers are coming to play on hallowed British tarmac, and they’re bringing enough horsepower to make the home team nervous.

BYD and its premium sub-brand DENZA will descend upon Goodwood Motor Circuit this Monday (17 March) for the annual Media Drive Day, giving journalists and content creators the chance to fling some of the world’s most advanced New Energy Vehicles around the iconic 2.367-mile circuit.

What’s on the Menu?

Four BYD models will be available for road drives, spanning the full spectrum from affordable runabout to plug-in hybrid family hauler:

BYD Dolphin Surf is the entry point into BYD ownership at a frankly startling £18,675. The compact crossover will be present in BOOST trim, packing a 43.2 kWh battery for 200 miles of WLTP range. That’s cheaper than a well-specced Corolla, and you never have to visit a petrol station again.

BYD SEAL arrives in EXCELLENCE guise with a dual-motor powertrain that catapults the sleek saloon to 62mph in 3.8 seconds. For context, that’s Porsche Taycan territory at a fraction of the price.

BYD SEALION 5 DM-i is the new family SUV entrant, starting at just £29,995. BYD is positioning plug-in hybrid technology at prices that make conventional petrol alternatives look rather pointless.

BYD SEAL 6 Touring DM-i is the estate variant for those who need both range anxiety elimination and actual boot space. The plug-in hybrid system combines BYD’s 1.5-litre Xiaoyun engine (boasting a class-leading 43.04% thermal efficiency) with an electric motor for up to 935 miles of combined range. Read that again. Nine hundred and thirty-five miles before you need to think about energy of any kind.

DENZA: The Premium Play

While BYD handles the road routes, DENZA gets exclusive track time with two machines that hint at the brand’s premium positioning when it officially launches in the UK later this year.

The DENZA Z9GT stole the show at last year’s Festival of Speed, and it’ll be unleashed on the Motor Circuit in all its shooting brake glory. The three-motor plug-in hybrid powertrain and the technology suite read like science fiction, but it’s very much science fact and heading to British showrooms.

Then there’s the DENZA B5, a rugged SUV packing DMO (Dual-Mode Off-road) capability and a combined power output of 677bhp. That’s Lamborghini Urus levels of grunt in something that could actually tackle a muddy field without the owner having a coronary about resale values.

The Bigger Picture

Goodwood isn’t just a jolly for journalists. It’s a statement of intent. BYD is already the world’s largest EV manufacturer, and the brand’s Australian operations have been systematically dismantling Japanese and European market share with aggressive pricing and genuinely impressive technology.

The UK is next on the list, and events like this are how you build brand credibility in a market that still associates Chinese manufacturing with cheap plastic tat from the pound shop. Drive a SEAL at 3.8 seconds to sixty, and that prejudice evaporates rather quickly.

The DENZA track-only arrangement is particularly interesting. It suggests BYD knows the premium sub-brand needs a more careful, curated introduction than its value-focused siblings. Let the motoring press experience the product in the best possible circumstances before the showrooms open.

Smart. Very smart.
