Logistics have been a problem for makers of all things, including cars. BYD solved the problem by getting its own ship, as you do.

Never heard of BYD? Until few years ago most Australians hadn’t, yet sales have been exploding. BYD insists on calling itself a maker of new energy vehicles (NEVs) and power batteries. It was a big moment for the Chinese company as it witnessed the inaugural voyage of its first dedicated roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) carrier, EXPLORER NO.1. The ship was delivered at Yantai Port in Shandong Province on January 10th, then made its maiden voyage from Xiaomo International Logistics Port in Shenzhen, China.

BYD’s EXPLORER NO.1 is 199.9 meters in length, can carry 7,000 vehicles, and will run on either LNG (liquefied natural gas) or conventional marine fuel. Within two years, the company will add seven more vessels to the fleet, all integrating BYD’s energy storage battery tech and shaft generator systems.

Wang Junbao, General Manager of BYD Corporate Division, highlighted that China’s NEV industry achieved a historic milestone in the previous year with sales and production exceeding 9 million units, significantly contributing to global green mobility. The successful launch of EXPLORER NO.1 marks a pivotal step for BYD in expanding overseas markets. In line with its collaborative spirit, the company plans to not only deploy these ro-ro ships for its own operations but also engage in open partnerships, forging a new epoch for Chinese automakers on the international stage.

BYD exported 242,765 NEVs in 2023 with growth of 334.2%. Meanwhile, its total annual NEV sales increased to more than 3.02 million units. BYD has increased Australian sales by 488% for the same period. Perhaps that is not a fair comparison with the previous year not being a full period. None the less, sales of 12,438 for 2023 is a considerable increase over the 2113 for the previous year.

Beginning with the Atto 3, BYD has since introduced the Dolphin and Seal, putting established brands on notice.
