We’ve been in Mini’s EV model, expecting the classic 60’s British charm to have transmogrified itself into a 2022 electric car. I’ve always loved Mini, every single one, except for the dreadful Mini One a few years ago. The less said about it the better.
Coming before our full review, I wanted to share a few behind the scenes thoughts on the city car from the slightly bombastic BMW group.
It promises up to 230km range of pure-electric fun, but the reality is you spend bit of time tethered to power points all over the place. After a time, it becomes a fun game of spot the charger. Peeps with points in their parks at home have a no-nonsense sitch. The rest of us need required research prior to departure, in case.
In fact, one adventure included being locked in to the local shopping centre after a late-night spin. Read about it HERE
The unintended consequences aside, the Little Brit is ever so much fun. It is a piss-take on the upper-class knobs in Old Blighty. There are flourishes of the Union Jack featured in the tail lights, and some minis can have the flag adoring the roof. The EV has what we used to call, a moon roof. Sun roofs we metal,a nd moon roofs were glass. When did that change?
But I digress:

ABOVE: Mini Electric
Mini EV costs from $61,490 drive awa in the base model. The plugin hybrid version costs another 9 grand, but who needs a rather unfashionable ICE as a boat anchor no one will want in a few year’s time? Our “Mini Yours” (yes I don’t get it either, stupid name) is $69,601.
The cute-as-a-button exterior, with its unique alloys, might make buyers believe the one trick pony line might apply, but not a bit of it. The interior is typical Mini, and like the cheeky frocks of the 60’s, reeks of the Carnaby Street / Sloane Square vibe.
It’s neat rows of buttons and sexy little central roundel harken back to the halcyon days of British motoring.
The are quirks aplenty, a firm ride, bijou cabin, and short range, but it is cute, even sexy. It is fun, aimed at a very specific crowd, and they know who they are. In many ways, the rest simply don’t matter.
In short, for a few, Mini EV is perfection, for the rest, it isn’t.
Stay tuned for our review.
