The JCB Hydromax set a hydrogen land speed record of 406.320mph at Bonneville. A Defender OCTA with a push plate bolted to its nose launched it, inside the 300m that regulations allow.
406.320mph works out at about 653.9km/h, set on a salt lake in a car burning hydrogen. Andy Green OBE was driving, and he already holds a world land speed record. The attempt set two records in Utah, one with the Southern California Timing Association and one with the FIA. Before any of that, the team spent a week testing at the Bonneville Salt Flats SpeedWeek event.
That brings us to the Push car, and the Defender OCTA is the fastest and most powerful Defender built. Its twin-turbo 48V mild-hybrid V8 makes 467kW (635PS) driving all four wheels. Defender competition work usually means dunes and gravel such as the D7X-R built for the 2026 Dakar and the stock class podium in Portugal. Bonneville wanted something narrower to push 2,550kg to 60mph inside 300m without upsetting the car in front.

Why the Hydromax Can’t Launch Itself
The Hydromax is geared for high-speed record setting, and can’t get itself off the line efficiently. Event regulations allow a push start of up to 300m at the beginning of each run. Inside that stretch the Defender OCTA had to get the record car to 60mph. Past that speed the Hydromax accelerated under its own power and the day’s real business began.
Bolting a Push Plate to a Defender OCTA
The push plate mounted to the OCTA’s integrated winch mount, a crash-tested structure with a crumple zone built in. That crumple zone was disabled, and extra fixing points went in, including a brace bar to the Defender’s front recovery point. JLR then tested the finished assembly at speeds well beyond anything the JCB team asked for.
Holding the plate at a constant angle was the subtler problem. The Defender OCTA uses 6D Dynamics suspension, hydraulically interlinked with continuously variable semi-active dampers. It takes body roll and pitch out of hard acceleration whose squat under load would change the plate angle, and that changes what the Hydromax feels.
Ian Johnson, JLR’s Engineering Delivery Director, said, “Maintaining a level attitude while accelerating hard was important to avoid unsettling the JCB Hydromax. With so much additional weight attached to the front, we wondered if we would need to ballast Defender OCTA to meet the challenge, but in testing its 6D Dynamics suspension kept everything level without adding any additional weight.”
Loose Salt and 2,244m of Thin Air
Lee Harper, chief engineer on the JCB Hydromax, rates the difficulty on the surface and the air above it. Not only is the salt loose, but the measured altitude climbs with the temperature through the day, reaching the equivalent of 2,244m (7,365ft) above sea level. By his reckoning that’s an unkind place to ask a naturally aspirated engine to work, so forced induction and all-wheel drive were what he wanted under the push plate.
“Defender OCTA was the natural choice as a push vehicle,” Harper said. “In traditional circuit racing, you’re racing against time but when setting land speed records we’re racing against distance, and the quicker we can get up to speed, the safer it is and the better performance we can have.” Every decision about the push car came back to that 300m.
After each run the Defender OCTA was used to reach the Hydromax for the return run, often miles from where the push finished. So the car that launched the record attempt then drove out across the flats to collect it.
The record stands at 406.320mph, and it belongs to Andy Green and the Hydromax. The Defender OCTA did its work 300m at a time, with a plate bolted over a “disabled” crumple zone.
