ECO2, A New Label for Models that are more Environmentally-Friendly and More Economical

Renault’s commitment to sustainable transport dates back more than twenty years. In 2007, Renault was the first carmaker to launch a label —eco²— that would provide customers with at-a-glance identification of the vehicles with lower CO₂ emissions and fuel consumption.

Renault is now announcing a new label under an ongoing policy to shrink its environmental footprint. For reasons of consistency the name is the same, but for today’s ECO₂ label the criteria have been toughened up. The new ECO₂ label is thus more meaningful to the motorist and closer in line with their expectations. For each Renault model, the ECO₂ label identifies models with the lowest CO₂ emissions levels.

The new ECO₂ label illustrates Renault’s continued drive to reduce CO₂ emissions from its internal-combustion vehicles.

It also fits in with Renault’s wide-reaching environmental policy, which seeks an average worldwide carbon-footprint reduction of 3% per year per vehicle sold in addition to steady reductions in environmental footprint for each successive generation of each model. This is measured across the whole vehicle lifecycle from the drawing board to the scrap yard.

ENERGY-EFFICIENT ENGINES

Renault’s new ECO₂ label identifies a selection of low-CO₂-emission vehicles.

The criteria behind the new ECO₂ label are tougher than those for the previous ECO₂ label, which denoted all passenger car versions with CO₂ emissions below 120 g/km, produced at plants certified to ISO 4001, recyclable to at least 85%, and (since 2011) with at least 7% of plastics sourced from recycled materials.

The new ECO₂ label identifies the most fuel-efficient  version of each Renault model, by type of fuel and transmission. Motorists can be sure that each ECO₂ version boasts energy efficiency among the best in its category.

From September 2015, the new ECO₂ label will also appear on the most energy-efficient versions of Renault cars already on the market worldwide. And the powertrains for forthcoming Renaults will be developed to be eligible for the new ECO₂ label from initial release.
