FCAI Praises ACT Government Electric Vehicle Policy

The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), the peak body for the automotive industry, today praised the ACT Government’s announcement supporting zero emission vehicles (ZEVs), deeming it “thoughtful and future focused.”

Tony Weber, chief executive of the FCAI, said the recently released Parliamentary Governing Agreement was a welcome boost for the environmentally friendly vehicles.

“The announcement by the ACT Government is like a breath of fresh air,” Mr Weber said.

“And it demonstrates a government that is focused on the future health and environmental benefits that this new technology can bring.

“While other governments have short-sightedly settled for a quick cash grab and taxed zero and low emission vehicles (ZLEVs), the ACT government has developed a long term vision to encourage their adoption.

“It is heartening to see the smaller states, like the ACT and Tasmania, lead the way in boosting the adoption of ZLEVs in Australia.  If only the larger states like New South Wale, South Australia and Victoria had their foresight,” Mr Weber said.

Targets introduced by the ACT Government include all new ACT vehicles to be zero emissions by 2030, and financial incentives and free registration for zero emission vehicles.  Converting ACT public transport vehicles and public vehicles such as garbage trucks and taxis to zero emission technology was also a goal, to be met by the mid-2030s.
