GAC AION UT Attacks Australia at Astonishing Price

There is something deeply satisfying about watching Chinese manufacturers waltz into the Australian market and make the establishment look like they have been overcharging us for decades. Spoiler: they have. GAC has just announced the AION UT, a compact electric vehicle priced from $31,990 before on-roads, and if that number does not make a few legacy brand executives choke on their lattes, nothing will.

Let that sink in for a bit. A brand new EV, with a 430km WLTP range, from under $32,000. The MG4 starts at $38,990. The BYD Dolphin kicks off at $36,890. Even the GWM Ora, which already felt like a bargain, struggles to undercut this little upstart. GAC has crashed the party with cheaper champagne that tastes just as good.

How Much Does the GAC AION UT Cost?

The AION UT arrives in two trim levels. The Premium grade opens at $31,990 RRP, while the Luxury adds a powered tailgate, panoramic sunroof with electric sunshade, wireless phone charging, and a ventilated driver’s seat for $35,990.

But here is where it gets properly interesting. If you pre-order between 12 March and 9 April 2026, GAC is offering the Premium at $30,990 drive away and the Luxury at $35,990 drive away. That is the full price, no hidden on-road cost surprises. They are also throwing in a 10A portable charger and a 22kW wall charger, which would normally set you back another $1,500 or more. The catch? First 600 units only, so the early birds get the electrons.

What Do You Get?

The 60kWh battery delivers a claimed 430km of WLTP range, which should translate to a comfortable 350km or so in real-world Australian conditions. That is enough for the vast majority of urban commuters and weekend adventurers who do not require a cross-continental odyssey every Tuesday.

Both grades come loaded with modern active safety technology, and GAC has made interior space a priority. The AION UT is positioned as an urban-ready vehicle, which is marketing speak for “it will fit in that tight Woolworths car park without requiring you to fold your mirrors and pray.”

The eight-year unlimited kilometre warranty is a pleasant surprise for a brand still establishing its Australian presence. The battery pack itself gets an eight-year, 200,000km warranty, and five years of roadside assistance comes standard, provided you service at a GAC dealer. That warranty coverage matches or exceeds most established players, which rather undermines the “but can you trust them?” argument that legacy brands love to whisper.

Who is GAC?

Guangzhou Automobile Group is one of China’s largest automakers, with a presence in over 70 markets. The AION sub-brand focuses exclusively on electric vehicles, and this UT is the fourth model to join the Australian lineup. Nineteen dealerships are already operating nationwide, which is more than some European boutique brands can claim after a decade. First deliveries begin Q2 2026, so expect to see these on Australian roads by mid-year.

This is the sort of pricing that forces a conversation. When a capable, warranty-backed, 430km-range EV arrives below $32,000, the excuses from legacy manufacturers start to sound rather hollow. “But our brand heritage,” they cry, while charging $50,000 for a Hyundai Kona Electric with similar specifications. GAC may not have the showroom prestige of a European badge, but for city dwellers who want an affordable EV without compromising on range or warranty, the AION UT is about to make a lot of sense. The competition just got a lot more uncomfortable.
