Genesis X Speedium Coupe’s Interior Unveiled at the Pebble Beach Concours

The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is held in August each year on the Pebble Beach Golf Links in California. Considered the most prestigious event of its kind, it is the grand finale of Monterey Car Week.

Genesis “freestyle” design exercise, the X Speedium Coupe, builds on the design language seen in the current range, including their electric models, the GV60, GV70 and G80.

After X Speedium Coupe concept debuted in April at Genesis House New York. First shown as an exterior model, (as seen here in the Sydney Genesis Studio), its interior design was developed over the past five months by the Genesis design group.

“The X Speedium Coupe was conceived as an internal design exercise that we later decided to reveal publicly. It was nothing more than a hard model built on our Athletic Elegance design identity,” said Genesis Chief Creative Officer Luc Donckerwolke. “Given the positive reception it received at the event, we chose to complete the concept and present it to discerning attendees at the Pebble Beach Concours. The interior captures the Genesis brand’s “Beauty of White Space” design ethos, which suits various luxury lifestyles and adds to the appeal of the dynamic GT.”

Exterior Styling

The Genesis X Speedium Coupe’s has a full-width lighting display with Crest Grille. Although it gives a nod to the Genesis signature look, it hints at the future direction as the transition to the electrification era gains speed

The body takes on an hourglass shape when viewed from above. The arching profile form accentuates the muscular wheel arches. A Parabolic Line extends from the front to the rear. The “anti-wedge” silhouette, is a gentle play between convex and concave surfaces. Lighting details continues at the V-shaped brake light around the back.

The concept coupé is named for Korea’s famed Inje Speedium race circuit, proudly shouting the Genesis designers’ passion for all things motorsports. The car’s metallic colour, Inje Green, is in honour of the mountainous around the racetrack. The is a hint of classic car that will age gracefully.

The Driver-Centric Cabin

Genesis X Speedium Coupe’s cabin design uses a classic Korean design principle known as “the Beauty of White Space.” It takes cues from Korean architecture that eschews “more is more” designs of many current vehicles in favour of something more minimalist.

The design has an asymmetric look where all the control systems and displays surround the driver. The instrument panel and floating center console wrap around the driver cockpit, and its simplicity can be seen in other Hyundai Group EVs.

Taking that a step further, the big coupé explores a future of audio experience through new sound architecture. Guk-il Yu, the head of Metal Sound Design, a company that specialises in high-performance speakers, worked with the Genesis team. It gave X Speedium Coupe strategically-placed speakers to fill the interior with rich sound.

Tweeters, midrange speakers, woofers and subwoofer are carefully placed for the finest staging sound experience. Aluminium tweeters, emit higher tones, and were precision milled for perfect acoustic performance.

Driver’s face a curved OLED display with a GUI includes a centre-mounted motor output indicator designed in a “newtro” style.  It stands in stark contrast to gauges found in ICE models. A vertical display on the right side of the driver’s seat has a touch screen including start button as well as the multimedia and vehicle control functions.

Craftsmanship that Lives in the Details

The X Speedium Coupe’s cargo hold has X straps over the luggage area inspired by the G-Matrix Pattern is seen through the brand in models both old and new.

Quilted leather is used liberally on the seats and the door trim, evoking the halcyon days of motoring reserved only for the rich. The steering wheel is covered by off-cuts of the seating material that was saved, then stitched together.

Two kinds of leathers are used in the cabin. One is a vegetable-tanned and the other is an innovative new breathable grain leather. Vegetable-tanned leather is uses natural  citrus fruits and mimosa without the need for chromium. The breathable grain leather used in the upper part of the cabin requires less water and lower levels of chemicals to manufacture when compared to conventional processes. In a final nod to environmental concerns. threads used in the finishing process are made from repurposed plastic, adding to the material’s durability and water resistance factors.
