Why have a dashcam?
You can pay $500 for a quality unit, and there is certainly a place for them, but $169 buys a Navman 150 Safety. It has fancy warnings of nasties like speed and red light cameras, and warns you of speed limits and displays the current speed (from inbuild GPS and maps).
If you don’t fancy a lady constantly nagging you, it can all be turned off. If you do that, it might be a good idea to at leave the visual warnings, just in case.
Safety:
The camera records the journey. The record is there, for better or for worse.
The warnings do help, believe or not. Most of us need positive reinforcement.
Security:
There is an optional $79 box to connect your dashcam to permanent power. It allows 24/7 monitoring.
Insurance:
Some insurance companies give discounts for dashcam owners. The footage can be used in claims, and is often requested by police for incidents you’re not involved in.
What should I look for in a dashcam?
The video is the number one essential. It must be clear, and the software able to adjust quickly to light level changes.
Safety warnings are a great add-on. Navigation models also add Bluetooth handsfree. Driver support such as lane warnings and collision alert come in handy on longer trips.
Desktop apps support your dashcam and allows you to view footage.
GPS tagging confirms your speed and position.
