Hydrogen cars do not burn fuel, they use fuel cells to convert gas to energy and water. Not only that, fuel cell vehicles clean the air as the drive.

Hyundai NEXO stores 6.3kg of gas in three armoured tanks under the rear floor. A fuel cell converts the gas to electric power, emitting water and clean air. It’s another way of storing energy, like that in a Battery Electric Vehicle, without the weight and fuss about charging. Hydrogen gas could be created with excess green energy then stored until needed.

So far, hydrogen gas is hard to come by, but consider this, LPG gas was once unavailable at service station forecourts. It is gradually being removed as fewer cars use it. On the other hand, hydrogen is stored at higher pressure and needs infrastructure to deliver it in any great quantity.

This week, we chatted with Scott Nargar, Hyundai’s hydrogen spokesman. He stressed how important hydrogen was as a future power source. Mass transit such as buses and trains, and all back-to-base type transport companies could convert sooner rather than later.

Cars and SUVs might use a combination of battery and fuel cell storage, but provided hydrogen is available, it has advantages over BEVs. Should you run out of gas, it can be brought to you, something you can’t do with batteries.

Recent plans have seen a sudden change in fortune for the gas manufacturing industry, with mining heavyweight, Twiggy Forest, announcing investments. His diversification signals an intention to  move the world in a particular direction. Australia has more than enough resources to become a world leader in hydrogen export, but that by no means ensures local supply. It certainly hasn’t done so with natural gas.

There is no doubt that burning fossil fuels must end, and it must end now to avoid a cataclysm of biblical proportions. The thought of a world with transport that cleans the air instead of polluting it seems like science fiction, but it is now science fact.

The notion that an electric car can’t do long distance travel was shattered when a NEXO did just under 888km on a single refuel tells us all we need to know.
