This year, more electric vehicles have been sold than at this time in any previous year.

Haters express “Concerns” about recharging, and the electric vehicle’s ethical damage to the environment. Is it better or worse for our planet? Do they really care? I very much doubt it. “Angry old men and bitter old women” is how one dissenters described the haters.

EV Fires:

Fires from battery packs are rare, so rare that electric vehicles are 20 times less likely to catch fire than those that devour fossil fuels, according to a Swinburne University study.

Electric vehicles have been inextricably linked to renewable energy. Like any other household utility, the EV owner can choose where their energy is sourced. Public chargers are use energy sourced from renewables, according to NRMA. An EV owner can power their vehicle from shards of sun or the lightest of breezes wherever they are. Renewable energy is available from rooftop solar at home, and from solar, wind, and wave, when out and about.

Child labour in lithium mines

Some lithium is sourced from mines where child labour is used. The raising of such concerns is to demonise electric vehicles rather than any kind of compassion for children. Their cries of “but what about the children” ignores the lithium batteries used in rechargeable devices such as mobile phones. When asked, EV haters would not give up their other battery-operated devices?

Steps are being taken to eliminate child labour.

Chief among them is tracing where lithium is mined. Blockchain tracing is one way of ensuring child labour is not part of the lithium lifecycle. Blockchain technology also monitors other environmental factors during the mineral’s above-ground life.

The haters are far less vociferous about fossil fuels at the point of mining, or any toxic effect on Earth’s atmosphere.

Deforestation.

Although opponents raise the clearing of forests for solar arrays as a “travesty”, the best place to solar panels is on a roof. Relatively few trees are removed for large scale generation, and studies emphasise the conflicts between renewable energy a natural growth forest are unavoidable. 300% more CO2 is emitted by burning coal and oil than could ever be sequestered on land where forests once stood. Mining is one of the biggest global drivers of deforestation according to Maxwell Radwin writing on Mongabay.

Farmers taking up offers of renewable energy generation have reported that stock use solar arrays as shade, and are completely undisturbed by wind turbines.

The Battery

Electric vehicle batteries contain minerals that can be recycled, including the toxic fluids. Before recycling however, electric vehicle batteries can be used as they are; easily reconfigured for home and large-scale battery energy storage. They then serve as a mechanism to capture energy created by renewables that would otherwise be wasted. Unlike renewable energy creation, large scale fossil fuel generators take time to come online whereas batteries allow instant access. This is particularly useful in emergencies as seen in mega battery installations in South Australia after storms.

Future electric vehicles will allow bi-directional charging where their battery packs can be shared and used by the grid, making every electric vehicle a mobile battery pack. The owners remain in charge and can limit the amount of “sharing” should they need a fully charged vehicle for an early morning road trip.

So, if “Electric Vehicles” are the Answer, the question is: How can we speed up the elimination of fos
