Is OneCarStereo Smart Ai Box Wireless CarPlay Dongle a Fail?

We don’t say it often enough; before you spend money, for the love of god, read reviews.

We tested the unit for a total of 50 hours of driving. We used the OneCarStereo Smart Ai Box for music, phone calls, and navigation.

Despite repeated attempts, we were unable to use the inbuilt Youtube app, or any of the other apps. It requires connecting to WiFi using your phone’s mobile hotspot. You can’t use that and the CarPlay connection at the same time, and connecting to WiFi via hotspot did not work.

We restricted our tests to using the OneCarStereo Smart Ai Box only for phone functions and found that it constantly disconnected.

The mild annoyance turns to infuriating madness when it happens while navigating a difficult area. During the 50-hour test there were dropouts, sometimes every few minutes. Each time it failed to reconnect automatically.

Now, imagine being in a storm during peak-hour traffic. The roads are full and the rain is pouring and at a series of turns, the unit disconnects, and unless you were concentrating more on the directions than the driving, you have no choice but to pull over.

On that occasion we found the unit too unreliable to reverted to a wired connection for CarPlay. We could also have gone to the Kia’s inbuilt navigation system, but the route was already programmed and wires CarPlay connects instantly.

Several other disconnects required restarting the OneCarStereo Smart Ai Box by pulling the USB out then reinserting it. There were 15 dropouts on a single drive.

We have tested a dozen dongles and all have had similar issues. Some had unusable handsfree for phone calls, and others just didn’t work. The main problem is that without wireless phone charging, using wireless CarPlay, runs your phone down fast. It is better to simply use a USB cable instead. It is a lot cheaper too.

So far, no wireless CarPlay dongle has been 100% reliable.
