Jaecoo has put the Australian EV market into a bit of a spin. The brand’s first crack at a fully electric SUV, the J5, has already racked up 1,000 orders nationwide. For a new nameplate trying to carve out space in a crowded segment, that is a massive start that suggests local drivers are finally done overpaying for batteries.
The J5 isn’t just another generic silent box. It is positioning itself as one of the fastest-growing EV options in the country by focusing on what actually matters: price and practicality. Roy Munoz, the brand’s Chief Commercial Officer, admitted the response has already blown past their internal expectations. It turns out when you offer a modern design and advanced tech without a luxury tax, Australians move fast.
Under the skin, the J5 EV delivers 402km of range. That is more than enough to handle the daily commute and the inevitable weekend run to the coast. If you do find yourself running low, a DC fast charger will get you from 30% to 80% in 28 minutes. It is just enough time to grab a coffee and stretch your legs before getting back to it.
Inside, the cabin is built for people who actually use their cars. Forget delicate materials that stain if you look at them wrong. The J5 features pet-friendly synthetic leather made from a silicone-based material. It is antibacterial, wear-resistant, and designed to survive muddy paws or messy kids. It is a rare nod to the fact that for most of us, a car is a tool, not a museum piece.

The real kicker is the price. Jaecoo is currently dangling a $36,990 driveaway offer that includes free premium paint. However, there is a catch. That deal is only on the table for the first 2,000 orders. With more than half of those spots already gone, the window for a bargain is closing rapidly.
Munoz isn’t shy about the urgency, either. He’s encouraging anyone on the fence to pull the trigger now before the launch allocation vanishes. As new shipments land and more of these hit the bitumen, expect that order tally to climb even higher. The J5 proves that the electric transition doesn’t have to be a financial headache. It just needs to be smart, durable, and priced for the real world.
