Lamtto’s RC18 Brings Wireless CarPlay/Android Auto to All Cars

Lamtto flies under a lot of radars but has a large range of nifty dashcams, Apple CarPlay/Androi Auto dongles, and assorted screens to extend the ability of an existing car audio system in older models. Not everyone can afford something flash and new. RC18 is a brilliantly inexpensive way to transform your old banger into something bangin’.

For under a hundred bucks (US), the buyer gets a 7” screen without the useless bells and whistles (which no one really wants anyway). This non-dashcam unit still has input for a reversing camera (not included), something to extend its usefulness further.

The box includes a couple of mounting options including a dual purpose iPhone magnetic holder, a 12V power cable, and 3.5mm connecter for AUX inputs for cars that have such magic.

We chose the FM radio option but there is Bluetooth, AUX 3.5mm available too.

Unpack the RC18 and mount it as you see fit. Plug the 12v in after which the RCC18 starts (in portrait mode). Turn the screens to either portrait or landscape and select transmission options, FM in our case. Set the slider to choose a vacant transmission frequency (but make sure it is well placed away from other stations with a stronger signal). Your car may “hunt” to the stronger signal otherwise. Tune your car radio to the FM frequency you chose on you RC18.

Once connected, we selected CarPlay (or Android Auto) and followed the simple instructions onscreen.

From then on, the Lamtto RC18 functioned like a modern infotainment system for music, calls, message and voice control.  The latter relates solely to the function of Carplay or Android Auto. The RC18 will interact with any of the apps within the CarPlay/Android Auto environment.

We were unable to note any significant sound quality difference between FM and BT but were not able to test 3.5mm AUX inputs.

Lamtto suggests resetting the unit if the OS slows down but we had no such difficulties. Music, calls, messages, texts and Whatsapp all worked perfectly. Youtube wasn’t tested.

Why is RC18 so significant?

It provides wireless CarPlay/Android access all vehicles including older vehicles as long as they have FM radios or AUX inputs, otherwise the RC18’s built-in speaker can be used.

Most screens and wireless dongles need wired CarPlay/Android already installed on the infotainment system, RC18 doesn’t. RC18 could even provide modern BMW owners with Wireless CarPlay. Currently, BMW rents wireless CarPlay/Android to users, with wired CarPlay/Android having been disabled. Although the solution is a clunky one it is better than nothing, or paying ongoing costs.

Conclusion:

The Lamtto site promises free shipping US,CA,AU.EU from local Warehouse, and that the unit fits all cars. The inbuilt speaker allows RC18 to be used without input into a vehicle system, although the sound quality from the onboard speaker is significantly less than vehicle speakers.

Importantly, RC18 provides access to apps, including navigation, as touching a phone while driving is now illegal in many jurisdictions. It provides a safe reliable interface suitable for P platers and experienced drivers alike.

Mirror Screen allows direct projection using Airplay and Superlink, and the OTA (over the air updates) ensures the system remains fully current.

This is the best Wireless CarPlay screen for the price.

Downsides

There are almost no downsides, beyond visible cables for power, and the screen wasn’t bright enough in very sunny conditions. Neither are deal breakers. Placement of the unit might take experimentation but the flexible nature of the design gives users many options.
