Normally we do a grand unboxing, flinging acres of plastic and packaging hither and yon. Not so for Lamtto’s RC23. It is a tiny box with minimal packaging, with only the AI box and two USB cables included.

Let’s get stuck in. The $89.99 price is $40 off and includes postage. There are cheap dongles, but in our experience these rarely, if ever, work.
What it does
It is called an AI box, but that’s a bit of a furphy. Although it has a voice assistant and built-in apps, most of us just want it as an adaptor to convert wired CarPlay into wireless. To use its built-in YouTube, etc., you must have it paired to Wi-Fi. CarPlay also uses Wi-Fi, and the two can’t be used at the same time. In fact, as handy as it is, I can’t think of a single use for the onboard apps.

How to connect it
You get USB-A and USB-C cords, so connecting the cord is the only careful part you should take note of. Make sure you select the USB that has the “USB” symbol on it, not merely a charge or power symbol. This will get you connected to your car’s infotainment system and its wired CarPlay/Android Auto.
Once plugged in, allow a minute for the initial handshake and screen calibration. Once complete, press the CarPlay button, open your Bluetooth settings, and select the AI box. Follow any prompts on either your phone or the main screen. Three or four presses later, the CarPlay screen will appear. That is the last time you’ll touch the AI box.
From then on, each time you start your car, your phone will find the system and connect to CarPlay without you lifting a finger.
You then use your CarPlay as you did when you had to plug it in with a cord. Voice activation of music and navigation makes life easy, but it is the messaging and phone being done by voice that will probably save your life, literally. For us, the voice activation worked out of the box, but if you find it hasn’t, use the voice button on your steering wheel.
Reliability
This is the best CarPlay box we’ve used. Although our test car had wireless CarPlay built in, the AI box proved to be more reliable. The car’s system frequently refused to auto-start, but the RC23 worked faultlessly every time. Startup time was fairly fast, and connection to CarPlay never took longer than about 10 seconds.
The RC23 gets power from the USB, so no other wires are needed. If your USB is under the console or in the centre armrest, even better. That way the box and short wire are out of sight.
