The Lotus Eletre just became the second car in the world to pass UN R171 certification. It’s also the first China-built vehicle to do it. From June, European owners get Highway Navigation Pilot via over-the-air update.
UN R171 is the global safety standard for Level 2 driver assistance. It came into force in September 2024 and most carmakers haven’t touched it. The certification requires both closed-course testing and real-road assessments to prove the system actually works within its limits and keeps the driver in control.
Lotus passed. That puts them ahead of almost everyone.
What You Get
Highway Navigation Pilot handles lane positioning, speed and navigation on mapped highways. The car reads road markings and signs through one of its forward cameras, cross-references with Google Maps data, and keeps you in the right lane for your exit. It’s proper Level 2 — you’re still in charge, but the car does more of the work.
Eligible Eletre owners in Europe will receive the update starting June 2026. Other markets are coming but Lotus hasn’t said when.

Next Steps
Lotus Tech’s intelligent parking and ADAS suite — LOTUS For Me in China, Eletre X in Europe — is next in line for UN R171 certification. More functions will follow via OTA as regulations allow.
