Chery Contributes Over $100k to Koala Conservation, Invites Public to Name a Joey

Chery has handed over $100,000 to koala conservation in three months. That’s $10 from every car they’ve sold since the partnership kicked off, which tells you two things: koalas are getting help, and Chery is shifting a lot of metal in Australia.

The funding supports Koala Conservation Australia’s Wild Koala Breeding Program, which welcomed seven healthy joeys in its first season. Chery also loaned the organisation a Tiggo 4 Hybrid to help transport supplies, food and medicine for sick or injured koalas. Finally, a practical use for an SUV that doesn’t involve school drop-off.

To celebrate, Chery is running an Instagram poll to name one of the male joeys. Voting is open now, with the winning name announced on April 3. Democracy in action, marsupial edition.

Your Options

All five names are inspired by Australian native flora, because of course they are:

  • Jarrah — from the slow-growing, resilient eucalyptus that can reach 50 metres tall
  • Banksia — Australia’s iconic wildflowers, symbolising resilience and adaptability
  • Tucker — named after the Tuckeroo Tree, known for thriving in tough conditions
  • Hakea — a hardy member of the Protea family that adapts to various environments
  • Waratah — the NSW state emblem, a symbol of strength and beauty

Personally, we reckon Tucker has underdog energy. But we’re not voting.

The Bigger Picture

“It is no secret that koalas need our support for populations to thrive,” said Sue Ashton, Chair of Koala Conservation Australia. “Collaborations like this Chery partnership make a huge difference to an organisation like ours.”

Chery is currently one of Australia’s fastest-growing car brands, ranking in the top 10 best-sellers nationally. They came from nowhere a few years ago and now they’re everywhere. Good to see some of that success trickling down to the fuzzy locals.
