Mazda CX-80 Earns Five-Star ANCAP Safety Rating

Mazda’s latest large SUV, the CX-80, has scored an essential five-star safety rating from ANCAP, Australasia’s independent vehicle safety watchdog. Covering all variants—petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid (PHEV)—manufactured from July 2024, the CX-80 showcases Mazda’s commitment to keeping Aussies safe on the road.

Scoring a stellar 92% for Adult Occupant Protection, the CX-80 aced side impact, oblique pole, and whiplash protection tests, with full marks for far-side impact. Even the tough frontal offset test proved no match, with strong protection for all body regions except the driver’s chest, where performance was rated as Adequate.

For the little ones, the CX-80 didn’t disappoint. Its 87% Child Occupant Protection score reflects Good protection for key body regions during frontal and side-impact tests.

The SUV also demonstrated a respectable 84% for Vulnerable Road User Protection, excelling in pedestrian protection, particularly for the pelvis, femur, and lower legs. However, it tripped up a bit with its autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system. While effective in forward collision scenarios, the CX-80 struggled to detect cyclists crossing during left-hand turns and motorcyclists in turning situations, earning a Poor rating in these areas.

On the tech front, lane support systems (LSS) were spot-on, securing full points, a comforting feature for those long-haul drives up the coast or through the bush.

Carla Hoorweg, ANCAP CEO, praised the CX-80, saying, “The Mazda CX-80 demonstrates a high level of standard safety, making it a reliable choice for families.”

For a decent size SUV that blends safety with Mazda’s signature style, the CX-80 should satisfy Mazda’s buyers. For the detailed nitty-gritty on its safety performance, check out ANCAP’s full report.
