Mazda CX-90 Debuts at Malibu showcase event.

The new large SUV shares the front-engine, rear-biased AWD platform with the new CX-60. It is a three-row SUV with mild hybrid powertrains, a turbo 6 cylinder diesel, and a 6 cylinder turbo petrol.

Managing Director Vinesh Bhindi commented: “Our second entrant into the new large platform family brings with it even more of everything – more power and performance, greater versatility and heightened luxury.

“The First-Ever Mazda CX-90 is the absolute pinnacle of Mazda premium; our most advanced model ever with exceptional levels of sophistication throughout that can be enjoyed not just by the driver, but the whole family.”

Performance

It has been a while since we saw an all new engine from Mazda, but the 254 kW/500Nm 3.3-litre inline six-cylinder e-Skyactiv is Mazda’s most powerful road car ever. The mild hybrid uses a small electric motor between the engine and transmission, as in other midl hybrids.

There is also a 3.3-litre inline-six 187kW/550Nm MHEV turbo diesel for those preferring oil burners.

An all-new eight-speed automatic means Mazda has finally joined the beginning of the 3rd decade of the 21st century. At last, a Mazda that doesn’t have a 6-speed auto.

Design

Mazda is touting the newly nomenclatured range as the deluxe level of what was already claimed to be a premium maker.

The claimed advantage of the new platform is space. A longer body and wheelbase packs a comfortable cosy cabin within. Lower bumpers are festooned with chrome, with brand new black metallic 21-inch diamond-cut wheels add an extra touch of class.

Although Mazda claims the design is all-new, there is still that familiarity so as not to drive away existing customers. After all, the car maker who frightens buyers, rarely recovers. Looking at the CX-90, particularly in profile, there is little doubt it is aimed squarely at an American market.

An added colour to the palette is, Artisan Red, one of Mazda’s Takuminuri colours.

Mazda CX-90’s cabin is created to leave an impression of space and luxury. High end materials include Nappa leather, Maple wood, and tone-on-tone premium fabrics.

The fabric on the dash uses hanging stitche inspired by hand-bookbinding, combined with Japanese weaving technique called Kakenui.

Like the exterior, the interior design looks more of an evolution than a revolution. It could have been much more daring, keeping in mind that it will be around for another 6 years.

Technology and safety

In a continued drive to improve, third-row USB-C charging ports, air conditioning vents, and upgraded interior lighting, leaves no passenger without

Those familiar with Mazda will know about the i-Activsense safety features, like Smart Brake Support, Blind Spot Monitoring, i-Adaptive Cruise Control, which a modern buyer now expects, and is required for a 5-star ANCAP safety rating.

There some brand new features to Mazda, such as See-Through View monitor, and a 12.3-inch centre display.

We’ll leak more details and soon as they’re told to us in confidence.
