The conformation came during an investigation in conjunction with said vendor. The breach was only revealed after some seriously good work by an external security researcher. Details are yet to be confirmed but it is understood that leaked data was from customers and interested buyers on dealer and Mercedes-Benz websites between January 1, 2014 and June 19, 2017. So far, Mercedes-Benz itself appears not to have been affected, and the files have not as yet been maliciously misused. It also appears that the only customers involved are in the USA.

Data security is a serious matter for MBUSA. The vendor has assured MBUSA that the breach has been fixed, and cannot reoccur.

The personal information includes self-reported credit scores driver license details, social security numbers, credit card information and dates of birth. Special knowhow would be required in order to find and view the data. A normal Internet search would not find the breached data.

Following this breach, further investigations have occurred into the accessibility of approximately 1.6 million data files. Most of this information are details such as name, address, emails, phone numbers, and some of their purchase details.  MBUSA have been at pains to ensure customers that a only 1,000 individual Mercedes-Benz customers and interested buyers were the subjects of the breach. Mercedes-Benz USA has started contacting those affected. As compensation, anyone whose details were exposed, will be offered a 24months access to the credit score service. MBUSA will also notify the appropriate government agencies.

Since the data appears to be quite old, and the number involved in the breach is fairly small, it has highlighted that while the situation could be far more serious, it was contained.

Any individuals who have questions or concerns about this incident should contact the Mercedes-Benz Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-367-6372.
