MG Motor Announces First European Mainland Factory

MG Motor will return to European manufacturing with a new mainland facility in Galicia, Spain, scheduled to start production in 2028.

The new plant is MG’s first European mainland manufacturing facility and forms part of the brand’s “In Europe, For Europe” strategy. MG says the site represents an investment of about €200 million and will create more than 2,000 jobs across Europe.

Annual production capacity can be ramped up to 120,000 vehicles, with the factory cleverly able to combine vehicle research and development, advanced manufacturing, core component supply and intelligent logistics operations. The European badges should be watching in anticipation.

MG’s European manufacturing plan

The Galicia site gives MG Motor a local manufacturing base as the European market moves toward the EU’s 2035 zero-emissions ambitions. The company says it will also deepen collaboration with European technology partners, research institutions and local suppliers. It also means MG may overcome tariffs imposed on CHinese-made cars in some markets. We live in interesting times.

MG’s local production will help it shorten supply lines, work more closely with European partners, and support its above-mentioned race toward electrified vehicles across the region. It also highlights Japan’s utter failure to rear the room as this announcement comes as Toyota, Lexus, Honda and others, shelves EV development expansion. It is almost as if Japan is trying to sink themselves.

Europe, batteries and MG momentum

The announcement follows MG’s delivery of its one-millionth vehicle in Europe. MG says its parent group has also passed 100 million customer vehicles globally.

MG has recently expanded its European portfolio with models including the MG4 EV Urban, MGS5 EV, MGS6 EV and MG HS Hybrid+. The brand also points to its Cyberster electric roadster, Hybrid+ and plug-in hybrid technology, and its first mass-produced SolidCore semi-solid-state battery as part of its broader European push.

The new factory is due to start production in 2028. This, coming from a brand that has had more owners than most, is a stunning revelation and now, the European market march seems unstoppable.
