The boys, as always, have had their say about this week’s car, the MG ZS EV Long Range:

Max:

My only concern is longevity. MG has been around for a long time, but not in this form. Since the SAIC takeover, it may as well be a completely new brand.

I didn’t care much for the audio system, for $60,000 on the road, I want more.

The exterior is bland, but the cabin is decent. Somehow though, it doesn’t feel like it will last the length of its warranty. Let’s wait and see.

Casper:

As a city runaround, I like the MG ZS EV Long Range. I can charge at home and have a bunch of solar so I’m not worried about the price of charging. I don’t drive long distance much, and it would certainly make it to the cottages and back.

It reminds me of a Nissan, or perhaps an earlier Hyundai, and although that is fine, they could have pushed the envelope a bit. MG seems to be erring on the side of caution and the exterior feels older than it is.

Ethan:

It is electric, so, I love it. MG ZS EV Long Range claims V2L so is able to offload power somehow, Presumably there is an accessory or a plug socket somewhere.

I’m on with a non-leather interior, but the infotainment system could use a rethink.

Performance was fine. It isn’t a grand tourer so it doesn’t need to corner at warp 9.99, nor does it need a range of 900km.

Nico:

MG ZS EV Long Range is good as a second car, especially if you if you keep your cute ragtop for weekends. Taller people might be challenged getting into the back seat, but 4 under 6’ should be OK.

There is a bit of noise at highway speeds, but around town is very quiet.

Travis:

Well, it isn’t very butch, is it?

Luke:

I’m new to electric cars, and the feeling of a really fast golf cart is intoxicating. I want to enter the EV owners club at some stage, but charging is still no good for me at home. I hate the thought of searching so a charger as we’ve had to do with other EVs. The apps say they’re working, but if they’re in use, they can’t tell you how many are waiting.

MG ZS EV Long Range delivers on the promises, so aftersales service would be my only concern with a relatively small dealer network.

Alan:

We did a review HERE and it performed well except for the initial fault in the warning system. An alert was sounding every few metres. Although it righted itself after being restarted, it left me worried for the rest of the week.

The power was adequate, but the torque steer was unexpected.

Charging is at a maximum of 50kw which I think too slow. I’d hope for at least 150kw, with a view to being able to charge most of the time at home. Sadly, home charging is as yet unavailable. Strata needs to get their skates on the remain ahead of the wave.

It does what it says on the box.
