The Australian automotive landscape is shifting at breakneck speed. While the Mitsubishi Outlander remains a familiar sight the value proposition for buyers is becoming harder to justify. Legacy brands like Mitsubishi are finding themselves in a squeeze between mounting financial losses and an aggressive influx of Chinese manufacturers. Recent 2025 VFACTS data highlights a 20.4 per cent market share for Chinese brands while traditional powerhouses like Japan have seen their dominance slip by over 5 per cent.
Mitsubishi Motors Corporation recently reported an 81 per cent collapse in global operating profit. This financial instability has already led to their total withdrawal from manufacturing in China. Locally this raises questions about long term support and parts availability if the parent company continues to contract. In contrast Chinese brands like BYD and GWM are seeing explosive growth. The BYD Sealion 6 has already become Australia’s top selling PHEV by offering modern tech at a price point that undercuts the Outlander significantly.

The feature gap and warranty trap
The 10 year Diamond Advantage warranty is Mitsubishi’s primary tool to keep buyers from jumping ship. However when you compare it to the “new guard” the shine starts to fade.
- The fine print The standard manufacturer coverage is only 5 years. You only get the additional 5 years of extended warranty if you complete every scheduled service at an authorised Mitsubishi dealer.
- The competition Many Chinese brands now offer 7 year unlimited kilometre warranties without the strict dealer only requirement for the full duration.
- Technology disparity The Outlander LS Black Edition at $47,990 plus on roads still uses a naturally aspirated 2.5L engine. Meanwhile the BYD Sealion 6 Essential starts at $42,990 and includes a 12.8 inch rotating touchscreen, 360 degree cameras, and a sophisticated plug in hybrid system as standard.
| Feature | Mitsubishi Outlander LS Black Edition | BYD Sealion 6 Essential |
| Price (MSRP) | $47,990 | $42,990 |
| Powertrain | 2.5L Petrol | 1.5L Plug-in Hybrid |
| Warranty | 5-10 years (conditional) | 6-7 years (unconditional) |
| Screen Size | 12.3 inch | 12.8 inch (rotating) |
| Fuel Usage | 7.7L / 100km | 1.1L / 100km |
For a buyer the Outlander LS Black Edition is a significant investment in a “trusted” badge while the company behind it is struggling to maintain its global footing. The Chinese brands are no longer just the budget choice. They are setting the pace for tech and value which leaves legacy models like the Outlander looking like a risky bet on yesterday’s technology. As BYD and GWM climb the sales charts the pressure on Mitsubishi to provide genuine innovation rather than cosmetic “Black Edition” updates will only intensify.
