The MMB Mini Ultra Wired to Wireless Bluetooth WiFi CarPlay Adapter is one of the few wireless carplay adaptors that we’ve been able to use out of the box first go.
It needed no app, no babying, and although it is called an AI box and promises other apps from the Google Play store, we doubt you’ll ever use them. At $51 aud current price, you get rid of cables in cars that already have wired carplay and Android Auto, but missed out on wireless. BMW models offer only wireless owing to their “Wireless CarPlay” subscription model. Whether they’re charging it this week or not is down to the vagaries of corporate greed.
The packaging is very light weight and fairly flimsy but it arrived in one piece and that all that matters. All of the money has been spent on the device. It is around 2cm X 2 2cm X 1cm with a USB connector. There are 2 extension adaptor cables for USB-USB and USB-USB-c, and you use those of you don’t have the space around the socket in the console or centre bin, of if you don’t have the correct socket. The user guide is brief and completely unnecessary such is the ease of use.

HOW TO USE
- Go to Home screen on infotainment
- Plug MMB into the USB marked with the
symbol, not the one marked for battery or charging
- Wait for CarPlay/Android Auto icons to change from greyed out to coloured (usually green)
- Open phone Bluetooth
- Select the AI box and wait for the handshake which may take a minute.
- CarPlay or Android Auto home screen should then appear on the car’s screen
Now enjoy your wireless connection just by turning the ignition on.
Benefits of wireless CarPlay/Android Auto are that you can operate by voice. Your car is free of the charging cables for your phone but here’s a top tip, if you have a wireless Qi pad, use it. CarPlay will eventually run through your battery when using it for navigation.
MMB Mini Ultra is a brilliant and reliable piece of tech. Unlike many dongles we’ve used, this one stayed connected, suffering none of the WiFi dropouts that plague even OEM wireless units. We’ve suggested the MMB Mini Ultra to our friend whose VW constantly drops its CarPlay at the most inconvenient time.
