New Acura TLX Type S to be Pace Car at Mid-Ohio


Acura’s all-new 2021 TLX Type S breaks cover as the official pace car for the Acura Sports Car Challenge. It is Presented by the TLX Type S, May 14-16, at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

The car will be in Type S-exclusive color of Tiger Eye Pearl. The turbocharged TLX Type S will lead the field to the green flag for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race.

The field includes Acura’s ARX-05 in the DPi class and NSX GT3 Evo in the GTD class. Acura made history last year, by blitzing the WeatherTech SportsCar Drivers’, Manufacturers’ and Teams’ Championships in both the DPi and GTD classes.

Acura power has won 3 consecutive races in the 2.258-mile, 13-turn Mid-Ohio course. Wayne Taylor Racing will be eager to increase its championship points lead. WTR’s No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05 won at the Rolex 24 at Daytona earlier this year. The ARX-05 of Meyer Shank Racing team got 3rd at the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, and no doubt is as keen to get another gong.

Helio Castroneves, drove at the Rolex 24 and will serve as Grand Marshall for this weekend’s Acura Sports Car Challenge. Castroneves’ is a three-time Indianapolis 500 winner, and will give give the start engines order, before the 2-hour, 40-minute endurance racing contest.

2021 Acura TLX Type S Castroneves’ TLX Type S is powered by the  Type S all new 24-valve, dual overhead cam 3.0-liter V6 engine with direct-injection and a single twin-scroll turbocharger. It puts out an astonishing 355 horsepower/354 lb.-ft. of torque (264kw/480Nm). This engine is found only in the Type S, and was developed engineers including those responsible for NSX’s V6 hybrid system and championship winning motorsports programs.

Acura claims it is their best performing sedan ever.

Along with the new power plant, there is sport-tuned 10-speed automatic, Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) with true torque vectoring, double-wishbone front suspension, Brembo® front brakes and Type S-exclusive Sport+ driving mode.

So punters can pick the difference from outside, TLX Type S has a unique open-surface Diamond Pentagon grille for extra airflow, a bespoke front splitter and rear diffuser, plus large quad exhaust outlets. There are two distinct wheel designs, one of which is the very same NSX-inspired lightweight wheels from the pace car pictured above.

Inside, there is a sporty flat-bottom steering wheel, Ultrasuede® trimmed 16-way power seats, adjustable side bolstering, and in case you forget what you’ve bought, some Type S embossing on the headrests.

Finally, the Acura has the surperb ELS STUDIO 3D® 17-speaker premium audio system to give track days extra oomph.
