The previous speed record in the category “G/PS” had been 347 kilometers per hour or 216 miles per hour and dated back to the year 1998. After 13 years, the Czech brand has now been able to exceed this value by 18 kph. The Southern California Timing Association (SCTA) officially recognised the new record. The car was driven by Briton Richard Meaden as part of the Bonneville Speed Week (13 – 20 August, 2011). In an impressive manner, Meaden was able to accelerate the Octavia a total of six times to more than 200 miles per hour on the five kilometer long track.
Robert Hazelwood, the director of ŠKODA UK, was more than satisfied: “That is a fantastic result, which we did not anticipate in this fashion. Our goal was to smash the 200 mile mark on the speedometer. Now we have set a new record and have clearly exceeded our goal. This result is the achievement of the people who have spent the last couple of weeks and months working tirelessly to prepare the vehicle for the drives at Bonneville. We are all very proud.”
