BMW to add the X7 xDrive40i to its X7 Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) range by the end of this year.
The X7 xDrive40i uses a mild hybrid 6-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engine as seen in BMW X5 and X6. Figures are an impressive 280kW/520Nm, with torque that can be boosted to 540Nm via the 48-volt mild hybrid system. The system uses a new-generation of the mild hybrid system with a crankshaft-mounted starter generator integrated in the transmission housing.
As many of these mild hybrids do, the generator can be a starter, a kinetic energy recovery system, or can add extra power back to the wheels. Rather cleverly, the recovered power is stored in a 48-volt battery that can power the generator, store recuperated energy, and will also power the on-board electrical system.
The eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission has shift paddles on the steering wheel getting power to the road via the BMW xDrive system.
The looks are those that some will love and others won’t, but no one can deny the package is impressive.
