Introducing Project MAYBACH
Mercedes-Benz has a long history of innovation in safety, design, and technology. Once upon a time, if you wanted to know where the automotive world heading, you looked at a Mercedes S Class.
With that in mind, Project MAYBACH is built from scratch. Abloh collaborated with Gorden Wagener, Chief Designer at Daimler AG, to give this Mercedes-Maybach concept and even more luxurious identity. Mercedes-Benz claims the concept car showcases a new design language and has pushed the boundaries of function, style, and collaborative creativity.
In the spirit of the world’s current obsession with SUVs, Project MAYBACH is inspired by the great outdoors to reposition a traditionally urban brand in the great outdoors. Project MAYBACH is a 2-seater, battery-electric off-road coupé, mixing huge Gran Turismo proportions, large off-road wheels and distinctive attachments.
Key for Abloh and Wagener was a responsible vision of future design. With complete creative freedom, the pair was able to ignore production requirements which enabled the design teams to conceptualize what the future of electric travel could look like. Project MAYBACH has a transparent front hood, are solar cells enhance the EV range.
The design of Project MAYBACH channels Abloh’s passion to challenge the status quo and re-write the rulebook of aspirational design. Project MAYBACH is enormous, to mix high-tech design with a new Outdoor Adventure design motif.
Whilst the Project MAYBACH show car was inspired by how one could explore nature within a uniquely luxury context with Maybach, the Mercedes-Benz teams thank Virgil Abloh for the inspiration to explore every day the power of cross-industry dialogue to imagine a better, more inclusive future.
