Renault 5 E-Tech Electric Takes Scottish Car of the Year 2025

Renault is on an absolute tear, lovie. The delightfully nostalgic-yet-modern Renault 5 E-Tech electric has waltzed off with Scottish Car of the Year 2025 and Small Car of the Year, giving Renault its second consecutive overall SCOTY crown — the first time any manufacturer has pulled off the feat. It’s giving history-making realness, and Toyota is somewhere clutching its pearls.

Scotland’s most seasoned motoring writers were utterly smitten by the 5’s retro-inspired design, zippy electric performance and everyday liveability. ASMW president Ally Ballingall praised its “unique fusion of iconic style and cutting-edge electric tech,” saying it captures the spirit of the original while delivering a properly modern, grin-inducing drive. Compact, agile and blessed with the kind of packaging that makes small cars sexy again, it’s tailor-made for Scotland’s twisty backroads, tight city parking, and the occasional dash to a Highlands cabin with a handsome tradie in tow.

This year’s victory follows the Scenic E-Tech electric’s 2024 win, meaning Renault has now taken the top gong two years running with two different EVs — a flex that screams “we understood the assignment.” Proper EV depth, proper momentum, and just the right amount of French flair.

The Renault 5 E-Tech brings charm by the bucketload, offered with 40 kWh (up to 192 miles WLTP) or 52 kWh (up to 252 miles WLTP) batteries, engaging performance, a tech-rich cabin, and that iconic silhouette reimagined for today. It’s fun to drive, fun to look at, and frankly fun to be seen in — which is half the battle when pulling up outside a brunch spot full of shirtless lads.

And because it qualifies for the UK Government’s Electric Car Grant, pricing starts at just £21,495 OTR. In a world where EVs are often priced like they come with a complimentary butler, the little Renault 5 is refreshingly attainable — proof that fun, style and electric smarts don’t have to cost the earth.
