Nürburgring’s Sabine Schmitz: You’re Gone But Definitely Not Forgotten
We were deeply saddened by the news today that Sabine Schmitz lost her battle with Cancer. The “Queen of the Nürburgring” is a personal favourite of the GayCarBoys crew.
We followed her career from her wsuccess as the first female winner at the famous German track, in the town where she was born in 1969.
Sabine won hearts with her warmth and immense talent. Who could forget the van challenge on Top gear, or her BMW taxi gig.
The Nürburgring is one of the most challenging tracks on the planet, and is one Sabine made her own. The Taurean was born on the 14th of May, and showed the dogged determination that would set her as one of the most admired figures in racing.
Tweets from Jeremy Clarkson joined a chorus of tributes from around the world.

Sabine and her husband, Klaus Abbelen formed Frikadelli Racing. They issued this statement:
‘it was announced that Schmitz had lost her long battle against cancer and died at the age of 51 on Tuesday.”
“Sabine Schmitz (14.5.1969 – 16.3.2021) passed away yesterday (Tuesday) after her brave fight against cancer,” the team wrote on social media.
“She was 51 years old. Klaus Abbelen and all relatives and friends are deeply saddened by the immeasurable loss.”
She will be rememebered for the first women to win the track’s 24-hour race in 1996 then LN Endurance Championship title in Germany in 1998.
“The Nürburgring has lost its most famous female racing driver,” the track wrote on social media. “Sabine Schmitz passed away far too early after a long illness. We will miss her and her cheerful nature. Rest in peace Sabine!”
Sabine was diagnosed in 2017, and after a brief respite, the cancer returned in 2020. IN a statement, Sabine said it was back in “full force” and was extremely persistent.
You’re gone Sabine, but your legacy will never be forgotten.
