ABOVE: Citroën SM coupe and DS Pallas Sedan
1973 Citroën SM Coupe:
The SM is one of only 12,920 units, and has a Maserati’s 133kW 2.7 litre double overhead camshaft V6. SM was launched in 1970 after Citroën ‘s acquisition of Maserati in 1968.
Robert Opron-designed SM as a luxurious sporting version of the DS Citroën s, and shares D series underpinnings. The SM was an instant success, winning awards in Motor Trend magazine’s International 1973 ‘Car of The Year’ award.
SM brought other innovations from the DS, such as: hydro-pneumatic, self-levelling suspension, and self-levelling lights that swivelled with the front wheels. SM had DIRAVI (Direction à Rappel Asservi) steering, with hydraulic power assistance that had two turns, lock to lock, and was self centering. Citroën managed to develop artificial road ‘feel’ while isolating the steering from road shocks.
Things were going well for Citroën SM until the oil crisis in 1973. Citroën ‘s resulting 1974 bankruptcy brought about the early death of SM, but surviving SM’s in good original condition have been steadily increasing in value, and have skyrocketed in desirability.
This 1973 Citroën SM went from factory to San Francisco, before coming to Australia in 2000.
Once in Australia, the SM was stripped down to the shell and fully rebuilt by dedicated SM specialists. The rebuild included a fully engineered conversion to right-hand drive. While they were at it, they installed the latest modifications and upgrades into the 5-speed manual SM. The body is white, under a metallic mica black roof. The SM is still in fabulous condition with 80,623km on its odometer at the time of cataloguing.
Regarded as possibly the best example in Australia, it is expected to sell in the $70,000-$80,000 range.
DS23 Pallas five-speed manual sedan:
This late series fuel injected Citroën DS23 Pallas five-speed manual sedan has been extensively refurbished by a Citroën enthusiast.
D series were popular, and 582,593 four-cylinder models were made over its 20-year production run. The DS23 for sale was part of the final batch delivered to Australia in 1974 and was owned by a member of the Pro Hart family, spending years at the artist’s Broken Hill property.
The car had $10,000 spent on it in 201, with its fourth owner spending a further $30,000 in the past two years, supported by receipts,
One of the nicest DS23s to come on the open market in recent years, the Citroën will appeal to collectors at its estimated sale price of $42,000-$48,000.
