Suzuki has just been handed a massive wake-up call, and it is a total shocker for anyone in the market for a small SUV. The Suzuki Fronx, built from March 2025, has officially scraped a one-star ANCAP safety rating, narrowly hitting the threshold to avoid a zero-star result. This isn’t just about a lack of fancy lane-keep sensors; we are talking about a fundamental mechanical failure that puts lives at risk.

Catastrophic Seatbelt Failure During the independent full-width frontal crash test, the Suzuki Fronx suffered a catastrophic rear seatbelt retractor failure. This rare and incredibly serious component failure saw the rear passenger dummy become completely unrestrained. In the middle of a high-speed impact, the dummy was launched forward, striking the rear of the front seat. It is the kind of failure that keeps safety engineers up at night, and ANCAP has already flagged it with Australian and New Zealand vehicle safety regulators.

Zero Points for Kids Even before the hardware snapped, the data was grim. Adult and child occupant protection levels were abysmal, scoring just 48% and 40% respectively. In the frontal offset test, protection for the head and neck of both the 6 and 10-year-old dummies was rated as POOR, with scores for both capped at zero points. Suzuki has skipped fitting seatbelt pre-tensioners to any rear seats, meaning child dummies were not well restrained in either frontal or side impact tests.

Structural and Tech Deficiencies The structural integrity of the Fronx is also under fire. While the seatbelt failure is a headline-grabber, the vehicle had already earned zero points in the full-width frontal test based on occupant loading alone. Protection of the rear passenger chest was rated as POOR due to high deflection and seatbelt load. Furthermore, the vehicle lacks a center airbag to prevent front occupants from colliding in a side impact, and it received zero points for Far Side Impact protection because Suzuki did not provide assessment data.

The message from ANCAP CEO Carla Hoorweg is blunt: do not let anyone travel in the rear seats of a Suzuki Fronx until this failure is understood and rectified. This is a direct warning to families who bought into the brand’s value proposition. “Budget” should never mean “deadly,” and Suzuki now faces a massive investigation to restore consumer trust.
