The Honda Foundation and Yarra Honda have donated $29,000 to food rescue organisation FareShare, which operates Australia’s largest charity kitchen.
The donation enabled FareShare to purchase and install a combination oven in its new schools kitchen. FareShare currently produces upwards of 4,000 meals each day and this year will rescue nearly 1,000 tonnes of food.
Chairman of The Honda Foundation, Mr. Stephen Collins, praised FareShare for its work. “We are very proud to support FareShare with funding for this new oven. FareShare is a terrific organisation that understands how to maximise efficiencies in food rescue and produce as many meals as possible with the best quality rescued food.
“Having experienced first-hand how FareShare is able to turn rescued food into nutritious, hearty meals, we are delighted to support the organisation to achieve its goal of cooking and donating one million meals each year.”
FareShare’s CEO Marcus Godinho said, “Three years ago we interviewed over 100 charities across Melbourne to find out how much food they needed to support people who fall on hard times. In response to this we set out to establish Australia’s largest charity kitchen. The Honda Foundation has made our dream of cooking one million meals a year possible.”
“Given levels of wealth in Australia, and the abundance of surplus food businesses offer charities, no-one in our society should go hungry. We only need to capture a small portion of the perfectly good food that currently goes to landfill in Victoria to ensure everyone has access to nutritious fare.”
FareShare has been making healthy, nutritious meals for the hungry and homeless in Victoria since 2001, by using food donated by businesses.
The Honda Foundation aims to provide assistance to local communities and foster goodwill among Honda Australia, Honda Motor Vehicle Dealers and the public.
