Honda HART Celebrates 25 Years of RYDA: Half a Million Students and Zero Fatalities by 2050

Honda’s HART (Honda Australia Roadcraft Training) facility has marked 25 years as home to the RYDA road safety program, returning to the St Ives location where it all began.

What is RYDA?

RYDA is Australia and New Zealand’s largest school-based road safety education program. The first workshop was held on March 7, 2001, at HART St Ives, NSW. Twenty-five years later, students from Abbotsleigh attended an anniversary workshop at the same venue.

The program has now equipped over 900,000 young people with practical strategies to reduce risk as drivers and passengers.

The Numbers

HART has trained over 552,000 students across motorcycle and automobile safety since opening in 1989. The milestone comes as Honda Motor globally works toward zero fatalities by 2050, with HART playing a key role in achieving that goal in Australia.

Honda’s Bigger Picture

Honda’s decision to establish HART in Australia wasn’t just about selling motorcycles. It reflects the company’s international commitment to road safety that goes beyond manufacturing and marketing.

The program has evolved significantly from a single-venue initiative into the largest program of its kind in the region.

Why It Matters

Road safety education for young drivers is one of those unsexy initiatives that actually saves lives. RYDA focuses on practical strategies rather than scare tactics, teaching young people to recognise and reduce risk both as drivers and passengers.

Honda deserves credit for maintaining this commitment over 25 years when it would be far easier to simply sell bikes and move on.
