MG4 EV is an all-electric hatchback starting at $44,990, something that will cause quite the stir considering the range and equipment. With on-roads it will still be somewhere in the late 40’s, but that is still a shed

MG4 EV uses the brand’s new Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) that will supply the basis for the new generation of MGs. It has rear-wheel drive, a claimed 50:50 weight distribution, and thin battery technology.

There are 3 trim levels:

  • MG4 64kWh Excite $44,990
  • MG4 64kWh Essence $47,990
  • MG4 77kWh Essence (Long Range) $55,990

The Battery options are 64kWh and 77kWh, with a range of around 530km on the WLTP cycle for 77kWh Essence Long Range, and 450km for the 64kWh Excite, and 64kWh Essence at 435km. Charging uses a maximum of 138kW, for a 28 minutes top-up from 10% – 80% on a 150kW DC rapid charger.

The USP will be that the MG4 EV will be one of the cheapest EVs on the Australian market, giving buyers a real alternative to vehicles with internal combustion engines, even if they’re part electric. Toyota is still bleating about its hybrids being a better option, but they are not. Moreover, the move to electric vehicles is picking up pace now that our governments are not going out of their way to hold the process back. It sounds a little like Toyota is trying to protect its development costs for hybrid drivetrains. If they keep pushing that barrow, their vice-like grip might find itself in a meteor-like extinction event.

There is much to-do about the batteries, and the possible slave involvement in its mining, but that is all a smoke screen to protect fossil fuel interests. Battery technology is quickly progressing at a rate that eclipses the internal combustion engine development. Not only that, but there were early electric cars that were killed off by the very same vested interests Australia has seen trying to thwart the transition to renewables. But, I digress….

MG4 EV has a 7-year unlimited kilometre warranty, and is fully transferable.
