Normally I get a bunch of people in, shoehorn them into a car, and ask them what they think, but the usual suspects weren’t available for the Haval H6 GT. It is the fastback version of the slightly non-descript H6 SUV. The stats are average, and the equipment level impressive. Then, you look at the price and suddenly the picture is very different.

2 models at $40,990 and $46,490 for a large SUV seems bonkers. The GT Ultra gets AWD, a sunroof, and a bigger entertainment screen. What’s not to like?

The exterior is a world away from Chinese cars of the past. The H6 GT weighs in at 1680kg, so I suspect the sheet metal is a little on the thin side. Nonetheless, the look is handsome for this 1729mm tall SUV. In fact, I’d go so far as to say is is downright sexy.

The LED lighting is automatic but the headlights don’t have the matrix function I’ve come to love. The tailgate is electric with handsfree operation that always works first time. The doors are nice and tall, and there is plenty of room to get in and out. It isn’t as obvious as it sounds. There are some SUVs we’ve tested that are quite trying for someone whose back is of a delicate constitution.

Inside:

As I mentioned, there is plenty of room. The cargo hold has a 2 position floor, and space for a temporary spare, hoorah!

Rear seat travelers have about 14cm worth of excess knee space if all passengers are are 180cms, and those in front aren’t too greedy. They have a comfy armrest and climate outlets, plus a couple of USBs.

Up front is a 12v and USB for power and connection to CarPlay/Android Auto. In fact, the Haval H6 GT is loaded to the gunnels with stuff. LCD screens all-round, and a cool looking centre console with a 2-level effect. A Qi charger rounds off a decent layout.

The infotainment menu is complex, and for some silly reason, the seat heating/cooling is in the vehicle menu rather than the climate menu, and there aren’t buttons elsewhere. The pleather seat covering does a decent job of feeling posh and the front seats have powered adjustment.

At first, the cabin felt a bit on the cheap side, but that was in part because I was also in a Mercedes Benz that week. Once the merc-Effect had passed, it was tickety boo. There is a certain elegance about the design, which includes lots of lovely soft feel surfaces.

The gear dial does the job, but I prefer a knob of some kind.

There is automated parking, so I’m told, but I couldn’t get it to work. Apart from a few little foibles here and there, a few weeks in the saddle would sort out the useability.

On the Road:

The smallish turbo engine has enough poke for round-town cruising. The same goes for highway travel where the 7 speed DCT auto can stretch its legs a bit.

I turned the lane keeping off in town, and the constant beeping of warnings really got on my tits. The auto-hold brake made take-offs far too jerky, so in the bin it goes. Drive modes include some AWD settings for those with an adventurous bent. Personally, I’d just not.

Steering is incredibly light, making the chunky SUV feel like a tonka toy.

The camera system looks incredibly sophisticated with a selectable 3600 view ready at the push of a button. It automatically comes on in certain situations, especially those needing finesse. Funnily enough, the H6 GT has a very nice feel on the road, with decent ride and reasonably competent handling.

We didn’t chuck it into too many corners at warp 10, but it certainly had plenty to give.

Conclusion:

Haval h6 GT was one surprise after another. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t come to the test with certain expectations. Chinese vehicles of the past had let me down badly. They were poorly made and felt years behind the rest of the world. Haval has thrown everything they have at this handsome stranger, and I like it a lot. It won me over with comfort and a huge amount of standard goodies, but mostly it won me over with price. 46 grand drive, people, 46 grand. That is an utterly ridiculous price for a large, comfortable, well equipped, AWD SUV.

As if that was not reason enough to put Haval H6 GT on the shopping list, perhaps a 7-year warranty and 5 star safety rating might help.

  • Price: $46,490 drive away
  • Engine: 4-cylinder 2.0L turbo
